The Wii was (and still is) an amazing console with a huge library of amazing games in lots of different genres. Rather than try to compete with Microsoft or Sony, Nintendo designed the Wii to be as cheap and cheerful as possible. Unfortunately, that means its video output options were limited to a rather sub-par component video at best, that is until now.
Wii Dual is the ultimate AV upgrade for your classic Nintendo Wii console (RVL-CPU-40 revisions and later). Set your Wii free on your modern HDTV or classic high end CRT monitor with this all in one solution. WiiDual adds the following features to your classic console:-
HDMI output – Full HDMI output including audio, with optional line doubling of 240p/480i sources and optional scanlines. Note that WiiDual uses a Mini HDMI port.
Full analogue output – Output ANY Wii resolution via the standard analogue port. Need 480p via SCART for your OSSC or XRGB Mini? No problem! It’s also possible to get RGB output for NTSC consoles.
Analogue and digital output active at the same time – Stream via HDMI while you game lag-free on your CRT like a pro. Note that the same resolution will be output on both analogue and digital at all times.
OSD control – Access WiiDual’s settings from a convenient OSD which works via a standard Gamecube controller or by means of a universal remote control. To activate the OSD, hold the L, R, X and Y buttons down until the menu appears.
The Nintendo Wii WiiDual upgrade sets your Wii free with a fully digital HDMI output port that supports both video and audio. All Wii screen modes are supported, 240p/288p can be line-doubled to 480p/576p for full HDMI compatibility, while interlace modes can be either line doubled or sent directly to the display. All line-doubling is done on the fly, there’s no frame buffer and therefore no input lag.
Some thought it would never happen, given the famously compact nature of the Wii console, but our friends over at Black Dog Technology have proved everyone wrong!

While the Wii isn’t the most fun system to disassemble (by far), the engineering behind this kit makes up for the inconvenience tenfold. I used the video directly from Dan Kunz, and he was obviously aware of what can go wrong and what needs to happen at a level no one but the designed can match (but I kept track of my screws, no lazy man’s route!).
The final product looks great on the console, and it shines on screen. I have an older LCD that displays 480p nearly perfectly and a 27″ Trinitron CRT with the random DVI input which is easily adaptable considering DVI is a subset of HDMI. While I don’t have an OSSC et al. to give my review of what it looks like up-converted, I can tell you that the direct HDMI 480p signal was heads and tails above even the already not-bad stock component.
As for the analog out, component is up a level, absolutely. While I don’t have any real way to compare side by side, I can tell you the subjective boost is there. I did ask my fiancee, who only really knows that I “mess with game systems and sell them sometimes”, and asked her for an opinion on both HDMI/DVI and component shown to her blindly meaning she didn’t know what was what. I also had a regular Wii with composite set up. I showed her the component first, then the regular composite, then the HDMI. She was actually most impressed with the component! I think that’s due to a fresh look, but she’s seen me, and has put some hours in helping me pack and test, that her opinion isn’t completely green. She said the HDMI looked like it had better lines but the colors didn’t pop as much. Interesting take!
All in all, if I could buy 5 of these I would. The Wii is my favorite system, it houses every game I really ever play… I’m not a gamer at all. Between work and my side businesses, I just don’t have the time. The only games I play off the Wii system are Super Mario 64 on a Nintendo 64 due to needing BLJ, and Breath of the Wild on the Wii U because, well, it’s obvious, because Breath of the Wild.
I ended up with a second kit I bought second hand from a guy who got in over his head. I ended up installing that one in a pristine red Wii, softmodded it with an EmuNAND setup and autoboot to USB Loader GX for a silly easy to use modded system where every single game no matter what system Wii, GC, or VC all in one place and one click away…
I bundled it with a ridiculous amount of stuff (all OEM!) including 4 Motion Plus Wiimotes (two built in, two adapter) all with sleeves, 4 Nunchuks, 3 GameCube controllers (irks me I couldn’t make it four…), 4 Mario Kart wheels, random gun, rifle, and sports game plastic Wiimote holders, two guitar hero guitars, console stand, power cord, regular composite, mini-HDMI converter, high quality HDMI cable, 320GB external drive, 64GB Sandisk Extreme Pro SD, a set of all the instruction booklets that came with an original Wii system, a plastic case non-pack-in copy of New Super Mario Bros Wii as the red really tied in the collection, and of course a printout of the pertinent information regarding the WiiDual modification.
It was a “Mega Bundle” and I wanted to just blow someone out of their shoes when they saw it. Let’s just say that I sold it for quite a bit less than I could have, but sometimes I just like to pay forward a nice thing for someone and it usually goes to someone who values it beyond the monetary assignment. I know the buyer messaged me probably a half dozen times pre-delivery, and I think he was pretty unsure if it was a scam. When it arrived, he was ecstatic. He sent me a picture of him and his two sons hard at playing Mario Kart, popcorn and sodas plentiful, and smiles + scowls of concentration abound… all looking super crispy on the big ol’ HDTV.
A serious shoutout to Matt for sticking with my craziness the night I ordered this. I saw they were in stock and immediately tried to order… but my bank kept blocking the transaction due to a possible fraud alert… after specifically allowing it in the app probably ten times, I ended up having to wait for 8am to talk to a real person from my bank. The number left was low single digits, and Matt completed the order pending payment for me so my WiiDual was secured so long as I paid quickly. I did, and the thing arrived in *LESS than a WEEK*! The service is unmatched, the prices are fantastic, and he ships like Mario LBLJ’ing. He clipped the package over the ocean and to my local Post Office. Thanks again, it really was fantastic and so generous of you to help me out!!
Over all, 10/10 on the WiiDual and 10.5/10 on videogameperfection.com. I check here first when I need something, and while it hasn’t happened again yet, when it does I will 100% order from here even if Amazon or whatever could get it to me faster. I’d much, much rather support Matt and this business than give ol’ Bezos more of my money. I look forward to these being back in stock and for PS1Digital to be offered as well!
