Hello everyone, I’m a big fan of retro video games and everything related to them, both on consoles and old computers.
I was always thrilled to see that console emulators allowed you to configure scaling filters that not only upscale to a higher resolution but also redraw graphic textures with filters like Hq2x, 2xSaI, and XBRz. There’s even an option to add custom shaders from other sources.
For now, I believe that the most extreme and highest quality shaders in the world of emulation are the ones from ScaleFX, which can be loaded into RetroArch or other emulators that allow loading custom shaders from other sources. 2D retro games look absolutely fantastic, like something never seen before, completely eliminating pixelated jagged edges.
So I’ve always wondered why modern upscaling devices that include CRT filters couldn’t also include the ability to add filters and shaders like HQ2X, HQ4X, 2xSaI, XbrZ, or even allow the addition of custom shaders downloaded from other sources, such as the ScaleFX shaders that include 2xSaI and XbrZ. In fact, ScaleFX even has XbrZ x6, which looks absolutely stunning when applied, but the classic 2xSaI also looks very good without being so radical:
And then I wonder, if these filters and shaders are much older than these newer upscaling devices, why don’t newer upscaling devices like OSSC Pro, which include CRT filters, also include and add the classic Hq2x, SuperEagle, 2xSaI, and XbrZ filters with different multipliers, such as Hq4x or XBRz 6x? Or why isn’t there an option in the OSSC Pro firmware to load custom filters or shaders downloaded from other sources and emulate them within OSSC Pro when using real consoles or real computers?
That would be incredible, and something I haven’t seen in any modern upscaling device yet. I think OSSC Pro, which is one of the most advanced devices in terms of speed between resolution changes and compatibility with even the rarest resolutions, and which has CRT filters, couldn’t also include the loading of 2xSaI and XBRz filters and shaders.
OSSC Pro already exists with CRT filters, it would only need the addition of 2xSaI and XBRZ, and OSSC Pro would take a giant leap forward.
Would it be possible with a firmware update for OSSC Pro to add and include filters for 2xSaI and XBRz, or even allow users to add their own shaders downloaded from other sources like ScaleFX and load them into OSSC Pro?
