Hello, Im new! I recently got my OSSC and I had some really great results on my PSX and some of my Dreamcast games.

My problem comes when I want to load my dreamcast japanese games (NTSC/J) on my console. When I load them it stays at a black screen and only play the sounds. On the contrary, when I load my NTSC/U games, it works flawlessly and look great.I have my Dreamcast connected to the OSSC through a VGA adapter.

I have been playing with the settings to see if I can manage to get it working but no luck, I also searched on the web but couldnt find an answer.

What can be the reason of the blackscreen on my Dreamcast NTSC/J games?

Can I fix it/set it up right?

      Thanks

That sounds like something the Dreamcast is doing rather than the OSSC. Which title were you trying specifically and what does the OSSCs LCD display show when you load this game?

I first try it with my boot loader (Utopia) to bypass the region lock, that shows a black screen, then I loaded Dead or Alive 2 (legit btw) that keeps the black screen. Because DOA is not my only NTSC/J game I also tried Guilty Gear X (also a legit copy, to avoid any discussion about piracy) and it also give me a black screen.

Before I used my OSSC i didn’t have any problem with both games.

On the boot loader it appears

              AV3_RGBHV 525-i

              15.73kHz 59.94Hz

when I load Dead Or Alive 2 it changes to:

              AV3_RGBHV 525-p

              31.46kHz 59.94Hz

which is exactly the same stuff it shows when I’m playing other NTSC/U games

If you call up the OSSCs on screen menu, does it appear over the blackness or is there still nothing?

Yes, I can modify stuff and look at the menu too. I was playing with some settings (and then return it to default) but can get an image

If the menu is able to be displayed that strongly suggests its the Dreamcast that’s simply sending out a black screen rather than the OSSC sending out a bad signal, especially with those standard timings being shown. I think this has to be a Dreamcast issue not an OSSC issue.

Hello, sorry to resurrect an old topic but I find a solution to my issue, and I want to leave a post in case anyone else also have the problem with a black screen when using Utopia and NTSC-J games. (In my case it was Dead Or alive 2 and Guilty Gear X)

The issue was the VGA cable: I couldnt use because I wouldnt receive any image. I tried another VGA cable and experience the same. It worked fine with regular games but fi i used Utopia to load games from other regions, it wouldnt work. Now I switched to a new Scart I managed to finally get, and it worked just fine, no issues at all.

So thats the solution: use a Scart cable instead of a VGA when using Utopia to load games
