Can the OSSC or DExx simulate a shadow mask oraperture grille? (re: VGA monitor)

I’d like to the OSSC (or DExx) with older DOS PCs and I’m wondering what’s the best way to emulate a VGA monitor look?

Nothing as fancy or sophisticated as, say, RetroTINK 5x or the kinds of effects possible on PC emulators. On OSSC classic you can use the thinner scanlines which are similar to what you’d expect on a VGA CRT monitor of the time when running lower res games. You can also add vertical scanlines but honestly I don’t think you will get close to emulating the look of a shadowmask etc with this.

On the DExx (which is similar to OSSC Pro) this is possible though there’s only a handful of Dexx users out there so not a huge amount has been done just yet.

It more about nobody having yet implemented the feature rather than the hardware (OSSC/DExx) not being capable of it. Aperture grille can be simulated via vertical mask/scanline function which is per color component (R/G/B) – this would be simple addition to existing scanline engine. Different shadow masks could implemeted by further expanding the engine.

Thanks for the reply and the information.  Maybe there will be enough users so that you could consider implementing it.

Regardless — I have one other quick question…

I’m trying to use 1200p output (which I know is out-of-spec/unsupported) from my VGA monitor to my LCD.

The OSSC has two options in “384/400p proc”: Line3x Generic and Line3x 240×360.  However, if I select either mode then the ‘400p in sampler’ options do not work.  Is this intended? If I use Line2x then both sampler options work correctly.

My goal is to try and display VGA 640X400 and 720×400 at 1200p.

            Thanks for any help!

That is intended (note “Generic” in proc option) since using 640/720 horizontal timings for sampling and multiplying them by 3 for output (along with vertical multiplied by 3) would result to pixel clock beyond what the hardware is capable of. 2x horizontal multiplication could be possible, but I’m not sure if that would be useful for many users compared to aspect-correct generic mode.

Shadow mask presets are now available in v1.xx series firmware.

                    Hi,

Any update for the Dexx relating to masks and CRT Grills etc? Now that this has been implemented on the OSSC it would be awesome to have it on the dexx.

Thanks for all your hard work.

                    Cheers

Yeah, it will be available as soon as I have time to port latest Ossc Pro firmware to Dexx. That also allows reading custom masks from SD.

Does anyone know of a 3d printed case for the dexx and De10? Would love to see something like that? Also, what is the cable called that connects the boards and what length cable is needed to allow for leaving Mister config? I will look to buy it but if anyone has any recommended sources that would be great.

Finally, is there any way to upgrade the dexx to improve performance to match the Pro?how do the other compatible developer boards compare to Dexx and Pro?

                          Cheers

I found Dupont wires (female to female at 20cm in length. These will be long enough when you change the orientation of the Dexx board. As for a case, haven’t heard of one yet.

Awesome, I’ll get those ordered. Would be awesome to get a case for both at some point. I wish I had the skills to design one.
