Confused on digital audio with OSSC

Hi all,

I want to apologize for what I believe is probably a pretty silly and potentially poorly worded question (not a native speaker). My problem is, I still don’t quite understand how digital audio will function on the OSSC.

I would like to get the converter to connect a Dreamcast via the TORO VGA box. For video, it seems clear for me what I have to do:

[Dreamcast] —> [TORO VGA Box] —vga-cable—> [OSSC] —hdmi-cable—> [ ]

How will it work for audio? I want the HDMI signal that is output by the OSSC to also carry audio. The TORO has two RCA stereo audio jacks. Thus it seems I won’t be able to connect them directly to the OSSC. Do I need an adapter that from the two RCA into a single 3.5mm audio connector? Are there potentially any problems with this? I’m quite worried about audio buzz, how “clean” can I expect the digitised audio signal to be? Should I reconsider the way I’m planing to connect my Dreamcast?

I’m not an audiophile, but it seems good to me, no buzzing or anything (even during fully white screens). The HDMI out of the OSSC will indeed carry the audio.

Alternatively, since you have a Toro, you can get a male-to-male SCART cable to connect the SCART output on the Toro to AV1 on the OSSC. The one cable will carry both video and audio (so make sure you get a good, shielded one), and you’ll have the additional benefit of the low-pass filtering that AV1 (SCART) and AV2 (RCA component) have that is absent on AV3 (DE-15/VGA).

Thank you, BlueStinger! This is exactly what I was asking about and helped greatly. Your reply made me put in my order for the OSSC and I also got the cable you suggested as well!

Thanks for this, nmalinoski. In fact, and I really thought I had double checked this, I don’t own the Toro but the Kuro (the only that only has VGA). I apologize for the mix-up! You make a very good point though, that might help in the future. I think I might still get the Toro one day. For now though, the missing low-pass filtering on AV3, do you think I would notice it much?

In fact, I thought I had the Toro too, I checked mine when nmalinoski talked about Toro. Same, I have the Kuro and thought it was a Toro. Their names are confusing ^-^
