Hi, I recently modded my n64 and I’ve been playing ntsc games just fine (5x, de-blur and AA), but I want to play pal games to enjoy my own language for a change.

The thing is the pal games are in 288p, that on 5x is 1440p, which goes beyond the 1200p the ossc outputs (I get a cropped image). If a go 4x, then it’s fine (288p on 4x is 1152p, which fits on the ossc max resolution of 1200p).

My question is, is there a way to either:

      – downscale the pal 288p back to the original ntsc 240p (I understand the pal games are a bit softer because they were “stretched” to 288p, so going back to 240p might make the games sharper).
      – patch the ntsc games (English only) with the pal languages (I haven’t find this on the web, only some English patches for jp games).

You can’t convert them back to 60hz but try this:-

Hit the menu button on the remote, then navigate to “sampling opt” on the LCD and hit “OK”. Now, use the remote to find “Adv. Timing” and hit “OK” again. The options you want to change are:-

        V.active – change from 288 to 240
        V.backporch – change to 50.

Adjust V.backporch and H.backporch to taste to center your image.

Patching games – That depends on the game and would need to be done on a case by case basis. I doubt patches would exist if there’s already a perfectly good NTSC/US version.

I’m not familiar with N64 mods, but I do have a switchless SuperCIC installed in my PAL SNES. It has three settings: PAL, NTSC and Auto. If you pop in a PAL game and set the console to NTSC mode, it will force the game to run at 60Hz and get rid of the widescreen mode that PAL games seem to run in. Not sure if the N64 has a similar mod, but perhaps it is something to look into?

No, no such mod exists for N64.

              Thanks for the replys.

So I patched the game to 60 hz, so now runs at normal speed, but it still a 288p game. I compare the 240p to the 288p version and the 240p game does look a bit sharper. Anyway, I’ll just play the patched version on 4x, having my language in exchange of some sharpness loss is worth it (until the OSSC Pro comes out, then I’ll be able to use 5x on pal games for a total of 1440p output, no cropping).
