Hi,
I wondered if anyone could assist me with my own stupidity please. I recently botched a Sega Saturn 60hz switch mod (unbeknownst to me at the time – I was rushing a bit and my soldering skills are shite at the best of times!), and as I plugged the din end of the scart lead into the back of the Saturn, there was a spark (and the lights went out!)
The Saturn is fine, but unfortunately the Pro is not. It seems to be detecting signals via scart fine still – they all show up on the display as expected, but there is no hdmi out put whatsoever, even in test pattern mode. Matt has suggested that the HDMI transmitter is probably fried, which sounds highly likely.
Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
Cheers,
Sam (Retro Muel)

March 24, 2024 at 9:48 PM #60888Do you have any idea what voltage could have ended on which SCART pin? Is the Saturn PAL model with 9V on DIN? Only R,G,B, sync and audio pins are connected on the Pro SCART connector and none of them are connected directly to FPGA or HDMI transmitter.
March 24, 2024 at 11:24 PM #60890Hi Marqs,
It is a PAL model 2 Saturn. I’ve had the cable for many years and I’m almost 100% sure it’s wired for NTSC Saturns (I usually use it with a JP white model 2).
I suppose the first thing that would have made contact with the Saturn would be the shielding around the din plug, but I barely made any contact with the console at all really. It was certainly never fully plugged in. I doubt any of the pins made full contact. The zap also set the trip off and took out the Extron 1804 that I had after it in the chain (bummer).
I was tapping 5v for a simple Saturn 60/60hz switch and my best guess is that I didn’t sever the trace fully.
March 25, 2024 at 4:59 PM #60930Was the Saturn even on during plugging? It sounds like a voltage leak from the PSU to the shell which then got discharged thru some route. If the Extron also got damaged, then maybe the worst surge came somehow from HDMI side. Without analog expansion card it’s hard to confirm if only HDMI chip is fried, but you could at least check that F1 fuse near HDMI connector is undamaged so that sink receives DDC 5V status.
March 25, 2024 at 5:31 PM #60933It was powered on, yes. I will check the fuse. Thanks.
March 27, 2024 at 10:01 PM #60981Hi Marqs,
The F1 fuse is showing 4.94v.
For what it’s worth, the AV4 HDMI input signal is also showing up correctly on the OLED screen.
Thanks
