U8 is the audio ADC which is somewhat surprising. If you have tools and skills (and expired warranty), you could try lifting its pin 8 to see if it fixes your sync issues.
ok, I noticed just before when testing, that in the 2 minutes it does work, before components gets too hot, there is no sound. And now I remember just before the OSSC broke down there was some ‘crackling’ in the speakers that I never noticed before.
I have nothing to lose with this board really as warranty is gone and sending for repairs is about the same expense as getting new one.
I don’t really have the skills, those pins looks awfully small for the tools I have. What would be expected to happen if I cut pin 8?
If you lift or cut U8 pin 8, analog supply voltage is removed from (the presumably damaged) audio ADC, effectively muting its output and removing the cause for excessive current drain.
I lifted pin 8 using a small needle and that did indeed fix my issue. Temperatures on U6 and U8 are normal now and OSSC seem stable. No audio anymore thru the OSSC of course.
As to what could have caused the damage in the first place. I mentioned I recently got a new Amiga 1200 and this issue happened sort of the same time as I got it, although not sure.
Is it possible for the sound output from my Amiga could have destroyed the ADC in my OSSC? Or is it more likely this was coincidental and I just had bad luck with a failing chip?
A1200 audio level shouldn’t be such high that it could damage the chip. Aging / failing by itself doesn’t sound like a likely scenario either, though.
