      Hello,

I’m noticing a lot of noise (scrolling horizontal lines) when outputting 480p from my Wii using HD Retrovision component cables. I haven’t noticed this noise with any other console (SNES, Genesis, PS1, N64) which all output 240p through HD Retrovision component cables. I’ve messed with all sorts of advanced settings to try and reduce this noise. Curiously, I do find that changing the “480p in sampler” option from “DTV 480p” to “VESA 640×480@60” (Auto defaults to DTV 480p when Wii is connected) completely eliminates the scrolling horizontal line noise (though it does seem to introduce faint vertical lines, but I can live with them). While initially I assumed I was good to go, upon further research it appears that the Wii natively outputs 720×480, so by using this mode I’m stretching the screen which is far from ideal.

I found this thread https://videogameperfection.com/forums/topic/ossc-noisy-output/ where the user SV001 had a seemingly similar issue, though for them it was on all inputs and the noise seemed to be a result of wires being too long in their HDMI upgrade mod. Before I start de-soldering the HDMI upgrade to see if that helps, I wanted to check in to see if anyone has any less destructive ideas for me to try first.

      Thanks so much!

      Setup details:
      OSSC Model: 1.5
      Using included OSSC power supply
      Firmware: 0.81a
      Self installed HDMI Audio upgrade
Nintendo Wii console, outputting 480p through HD Retrovision Wii Component Cables
TV is a 4K Samsung UN50MU6300F, OSSC is connected directly to it via HDMI cable to HDMI-DVI adapter
      Everything is US NTSC

Is your Wii HDMI modded or modded in any way? Would it be possible to try a different PSU for the console?

My Wii doesn’t have any display outputs mods like an HDMI mod, though it has been modded for homebrew if that’s relevant.

Unfortunately I don’t have another compatible PSU I can try, nor do I have another 480p component output that I can try to eliminate the Wii as being the culprit. I have tried different component cables which made no difference so it isn’t those anyways.

If you think those things are the most likely causes, I can certainly look into trying to test those things?

It’s definitely a possibility. Are the scrolling lines wavy or straight?

              They’re straight

Oh the other thing I forgot to mention is that I tested bypassing the OSSC (ie. by plugging the Wii component cables directly into the TV (Samsung UN50MU6300F) and a monitor (Dell 2407WFPb)) and I didn’t see any scrolling horizontal lines. At first I assumed this proved the OSSC (or its power supply) was the culprit, but I then had the thought that maybe the TV and monitor are both performing some sort of post processing that removes the noise from the signal? Is that possible?

very odd indeed, I don’t suppose you have another component video source to try?

I’ve test multiple other 240p component video sources (SNES, N64, PS1, Genesis) and they all worked fine. I just don’t have another 480p component source to test.

However, I just thought to test 480i video sources to see what I could find there. Somewhat unsurprisingly, when I set the Wii to 480i I still saw the horizontal lines, but what was interesting was I was able to replicate the same horizontal lines from the N64 when running a game that outputs 480i (which is somewhat rare but luckily I have games that do so).

So, this tells me that there’s a high probability that the issue lies with the OSSC (or its power supply) on 480i and 480p component video sources. Which means it’s likely the power supply, the HDMI mod I did, or some other component of the OSSC. Would you agree based on these tests?

It seems unlikely if other sources are working, what you say about changing DTV mode to the incorrect setting is curious too.

I picked up another power supply for testing and the problem persisted so I’ve eliminated that anyways.
