I’m playing around with an old Iyama monitor I got from a friend and just got L5x in 256×224 optimized working and it looks amazing. However I can’t get 512×224 mode graphics looking crisp. I’ve managed to at least get readable text on screen in Seiken Densetsu 3 and the SD2Snes menu, it’s acceptable but doesn’t look great. Is it even possible to get this right without messing up 256×224 resolutions and if so, what settings can I try to play around with?

Try using 512×240 optimized mode (introduced in v0.82) instead. 256-column modes should still look okay with that.

Oops! I had completely missed this firmware update, what a lucky coincidence that this was just implemented, thanks Marqs!

Upgraded and it looked great right off the bat, I didn’t even need to adjust the sampling phase.

It’s funny to think back of how impressed I was when I got my first unit a little over two years ago. If I configure my OSSC using only settings available back then (no L5X, and no snes deblur in particular) what impressed me back then looks like a blurred mess to me now. I really can not imagine any other feature to wish for now to make my snes experience more pixel perfect. Amazing work.

Sort of related: is it possible to have the 512×240 optimized mode to display an aspect ratio of 4:3 instead of 1:1?

Did you ever find a way to achieve that @Winneon ?

No, aspect ratios are fixed when in optimized mode. The aspect ratio varies by line mode, because of the multiplication factor used.

The one closest to 4:3 would be x5 mode (it is a bit too wide), x4 is 1:1 (i.e. 8:7), x3 is even wider than x5, and x2 is ludicrous wide.

You can see the horizontal multiplication factors used for each mode at the bottom of the optimal timings wiki page:

It’s a shame the table is kind of hidden away like that actually, because people ask this kind of question all the time.

Got it and it does make sense when you think of it.
I think I will simply stick to “line 4x mode” with “Generic 4:3” configuration when wishing to play games with 512 lines in correct aspect ratio.
“512×240 optim.” looks very crisp but the aspect ratio does feel a bit odd.
I guess it is down to personal preference as to which way you want to go and it is great to have both options.
