Depending on how those Superguns process sync, you might still need to use csync instead of H+V syncs with VGA. For OSSC+F3, a simple passive SCART to VGA cable should be a sufficient solution that should work with all Superguns.
In the interest of not disconnecting/connecting when switching to/from F3, is there a VGA cable out there that would work for this from VGA output?
If this newbie may, I’d like to share my experience here as I’ve managed to pull off a solid RGB SCART sync.
First, what I have:
– Taito F3 mobo + RayForce cart
– Board-A Boardmaster (Blast City) supergun
– OSSC (out-of-box FW v0.81a) + a RetroGamingCables RGB SCART cable for Boardmaster (
– A cheap 23″ LG ultrawide LCD monitor.
The first thing I tried was unboxing the OSSC and getting my Taito F3 board to work with it. No luck no matter what I did. I then decided to try a Blue Elf bootleg cart I had laying around with better success. Games like Puzzle Bobble worked nicely but for some reason Metal Slug didn’t. I even left the supergun on and let it sit for a bit and it eventually established sync on its own.
That’s when I starting doing research and found this page. I did as suggested in page 2: adjusting the H-sync, V-sync tolerances, and the H-PLL Pre and Post-coast levels. And lo and behold, an image! …although many sync drops were had. I played with those levels some more as well as Analog sync Vth until I finally nailed a solid sync.
No sync drops, buttery-smooth gameplay!
(It’s worth noting my supergun has a twist knob that regulates the H-position of the game’s image which proved to be a major factor when finding the right H-sync tolerance level. Sync would drop as I twisted the knob.)
Here (Page 2) there is instruction how to make a passive scart to VGA adapter. It is very easy. If you can’t built it yourself then give the instruction to an expert.

Here is a video of mine showing F3 working with the passive adapter on a Sigma super gun.
Do any of the retro gaming cable builders make this cable?
Send a message to retrogaming cables. They may can help you.
Would it be wise to use VGA input on the OSSC for all arcade boards and not just F3? Or is SCART input on the OSSC higher performance?
Using VGA you will discover that many boards won’t display. Most boards output through scart only.
Interesting, I wouldn’t have guessed that.
In that case I think the only way to switch back and forth between F3 and other boards without changing physical connections on the supergun or OSSC would be to leave both SCART and VGA connected separately all the time from the HAS supergun to the OSSC and select the input on the OSSC.
This is correct. A VGA cable will always remain on the OSSC input. I have put a jamma edge extender that outputs directly to scart with the advantage to also be able adjust RGB levels. So is os easy for me to swap between main scart cable and scart to VGA adapter.
Can you point me toward that JAMMA edge extender? I can’t visualize it and Google is coming up empty.
