NES and SNES? Perfect! As generally the resolution is 256p except some rare occasions. Geneses/CD just have two profiles for 256p and 320p and switch between them. Annoying but nothing bad. At worse I’ll suffer through blurry main menu screens that are in one resolution before the gameplay switches to another.

480p/i systems have quirks but generally are ok and in the case of the Gamecube you can set individual settings for 480p/480i/240p. No problem.

But N64 (PSone too) my god with so many effing resolutions!!!! The timing settings are a fng headache. I’m no except like you guys so put yourself in the shoes of a more casual person that isn’t stupid but still this stuff pisses me off.

I have the timing perfect for straight up Super Mario 64 320x240p. Anything else is a nightmare.

While there are a few N64 games that CAN run at 640×480, such as Vigilante 8 in Ultra resolution mode, most N64 games favored one of the following due to 640×480 being impractical:
320×240 = The typical “low” resolution. Some games go below it. Conker runs at 292×214
480×360 = This was the most common “High resolution”. The Turok games also use 480×232 if you run the game in “letterbox” mode.
640×222 = This was also a common high resolution. Perfect Dark uses it in high resolution mode, although the PAL version uses 448×268 for high resolution mode.)
400×440 = This is what Factor 5 games used. (Rogue Squadron/Battle for Naboo/Indiana Jones)

So I downloaded the firebrand PSone 512 profile and it helps but the sampling phase is just impossible. Then you gotta worry about all the other resolutions as well. Gesh. What a nightmare.

I might just go with N64 HDMI here and avoid the OSSC for these systems that have so many resolutions in the same field.

I love my OSSC for games that mostly one resolution. Works brilliantly and minimal fuss. But setting timings is the absolutely worse part about the OSSC. No doubt. Very little help out there too for casual people that are trying to understand it all.

Yeah, when it comes to the N64 I feel it’s useful to have a 320×240 profile and a generic 4:3 profile. With the PS1 I just stick with generic 4:3. I’m not sure if it would be possible for the Pro to detect these changes, and wouldn’t be surprised if it is impossible.

Yeah i’ve wasted hours of my life with sampling phase for gamecube, wii, and especially N64.

Again, i can get super mario (320) looking perfect but all other stuff is a nightmare. Too many resolution changes and making the N64 which is blurry already blurrier due to timings being wrong is just bad. That system does not need help looking blurrier.

So yeah saddens me to say this but i’m probably gonna take it off the OSSC chain and find a HDMI solution.

Wii has similar problems. Blurry ugly system on OSSC and sampling phase is a nightmare. Needs a HDMI solution. What that’s actually obtainable. Which in the retro community good luck.

Nothing says you have to use optimal timings, it’s a preference not the correct way to use your OSSC, I never use them because I find them over sharp, they look nothing like a CRT does.

Good news is we’ll be stocking the new N64 HDMI/RGB dual output mods if we can ever get our hands on them! I have more hope of that than ever getting any more UltraHDMIs anyway.

Yeah, I gave up with the N64 and run everything on the Generic 4:3 setting. For the PS1 I have 2 profiles a 240p with optimal timings and such and a generic one. I feel like most console you need more than 1 profile, for example I have 2 profiles for the Genesis and 2 for the SNES and like 3 for the Saturn. It’s just a matter of getting used to switching profiles as needed.

Hey guys so I figured out kinda what happened but I’m still confused. Lol. Ok so I just got my N64 Ultra HDMI and I was super pumped. I’m like no more stupid phases and it’s going to blow my RGB+OSSC combo out of the water.

So I’ve done like 20 hours of testing and holy crap what I discovered.

So my RGB mod from retrofixes is a simple RGB mod. I don’t remember getting deblur or anything just a simple RGB mod.

But in testing my ultra hdmi and turned on sharp pixels and deblur and switching back and forth between that and my OSSC N64 RGB 5x it looks the same!!!! Well the OSSC isn’t as bright and the aspect ratio is off cutting the top and bottom on some games but other than that the sharpness of text and everything is the same!!!

WTF!!! When I turn off deblur and sharp pixel on the ultra then it looks blurrier for sure. What the heck is going on?

Ok so my initial complaint was setting the phases with the multiple resolutions. Well my phase options are actually dead on perfect!!!! What was messing me up is that deblur messes with font. So on my N64 OSSC+RGB the games that have messed up font due to deblur look exactly the same on both ultra and RGB. When I turn off deblur on ultra the font is fixed. What the heck!!! How can that be if my RGB mod from like 2019 didn’t have deblur. I’m so confused. I thought this blurry text was just different resolution and the dumb phase but no is the deblur.

Hope this makes sense. I’m so confused. Lol.
