@megari it’s a weird one for sure, because of the high quality cable you would expect it to be a lot better picture quality wise, I almost feel as if it’s a different problem entirely in a way to what I was experiencing before (I might be wrong) but now instead of seeing the checkerboarding throughout the image, now what you see is dark moving diagonal lines (visible especially on the red of Mario’s hat etc, tomorrow I might try get some new pictures or even footage if the camera picks it up well.
Would be good if anyone else on the forum maybe knew more about potential for ground loops or any other solutions for this.
Managed to get it fixed with help of the store owner and picture looks sharp but I too am still experiencing interference similar to noctuas – maybe slightly different that what my screenshots looked like before as now the lines are moving darker diagonal lines and not just the composite interference.
@megari I can confirm that is that cable I have ordered and just received today, problem is though now I am only getting a black and white image… To he fair, I think it is actually just the cable and not the koryuu, here is a picture (not good quality sorry 🙁 ) of the PCB inside. I think if you look at the top contact in the picture you can see that it appears that some solder has bridged over onto the 75 ohm resistor ( I think that’s what it is, it’s so small that it’s almost unreadable), do you think this bridge could be causing this issue at all? Otherwise I’m beat!
Here is some photos I took back when I first encountered the problem
thanks @megari for oyur replies in both threads, i can confirm that my svideo cable (modded to repair the overly bright pal svideo signal) does have the composite lead attatched also and i am currently awaiting a better cable to be delivered to test if it looks much better. the interference (at least for myself) is mcuh more like a very harsh checkerboarding. i was under the assumption that higher quality svideo and component cables would solve this problem it was only after @noctua tested these things that he discovered the comb filter was solving his issues.
I have not long moved house but in a couple of days i will take some footage of the n64 output and i would be happy to test custom firmware for you to resolve if need be (would need to buy the jtag device thing first)
thanks
@megari myself and another user on this forum have been trying to use the koryuu with svideo from pal n64s (using modded cables which fix the pal n64s video problems) we have however been experiencing very high levels of interfernce (checkerbaord like) much more than would be expected of well shielded svideo cables. after much testing, user @noctua on this forum discovered that the comb filter from the retrotink mini solved this issue using giving him the cleanest signal from an unmodified pal n64.
do you think that this kind of filter could potentially be added by firmware or do you think there would be any other solution for this problem that could be implemented in some way?
thanks
hello again, i wasnt aware of this feature in the retrotink 2x, i have actually just a couple of days ago purchased a new n64 cable from classicgamestore which is compatible with pal n64s. I am expecting some impovement from the not so great cable from consolegoods. one more upgrade i am still to make however i was the upgrade from the thick but still basic component cables i had bought cheap from amazon – to the hd retrovision component male to male so that i would have the highest quality possible every step in the chain.
now that you have wrote this i do feel less confident however and hopefully you are right and this could be added in firmware maybe we should try and contact the koryuu creator to see if this can be done. anyhow i will update the forum with my results from the classicgamestore svideo cable and maybe another one next month once i buy the hd retrovision cables also.
thanks for the update
Had the chance to test anything yet? Or better still.. have you found any “solutions” to help with our interference problems?
Okay, my unit definitely supports svideo, I just know if I buy a super high quality cable I wouldn’t be able to mod it, would I be able to reduce the gain on Ossc to fix the brightness you think? Also do you have a name for the eBay seller for the modded cable?
Firstly I think I got the optimal timings *mostly* sorted, I was using 320×240 optim so I think i made it harder for myself instead of using generic.
Did the svideo cables you use also have a cable for composite also because as far as I can tell from research it is most likely the cable from consolegoods or any other cable with the yellow composite end that will give this kind of interference. Since you said you have a pal N64 I’m curious as to what other cables you tried since it’s not meant to be compatible with svideo. Did you experience blown out colours at all or did you use modded cables?
I am using 320 optim mode, was that my problem…? Even using this mode I have it looking really quite sharp.
Regarding interference.. what are some things that would cause such strong interference because I feel like it get this on a few of my consoles, pretty bad on SNES even using really high quality sheilded scary cables and somewhat aswell on GameCube using the sync on Luna cables. It may be on others but those are what I definitely notice a lot. I would attach an image if you have any way of me doing so.
Which setting would I change then?
Sorry I don’t know how to properly describe what I’m meanjng but basically The problem was that the picture was out of phase in multiple areas of the screen (vertical blurry zones down the screen) that would usually be fixed by altering the sample phase but there was no value of this that synced the picture properly, is it h active I would need to change instead?
This is unrelated to the noisy picture also, that is persistent always it’s seems, kinda looks like a the bad diagonal lines from a noisy SNES but worse.
Btw I finally got it synced at h sample rate 396.65 for whatever reason. Still really bad interference though
Yea it’s a pal N64 and the noise is pretty bad I do have a photo but don’t think I can attach it here. Also still haven’t figured out a sample rate that will properly sync the image
Hi, did you get this fixed ever? I have just received mine and have the same bad interference, I know this is probably inherent with the video signal but if there is anything that can be done to minimise this that would be great, also what settings should I be using as the settings from the wiki were not properly syncing the image, thanks anyone
