Problem solved! As it turns out the HDMI port had poor solder contacts – pushing down on it slightly causes the image to return consistently.
I can only conclude this is why things were working when the OSSC was positioned at an angle because the HDMI cable was not applying any upward stress to the port unlike when it was laid flat. Reflowing the joints appears to have fixed this for now.
Quick update – I have noticed the image returns briefly while holding the OSSC up and at an angle, very flaky signal however and it returns back to a black screen with the slightest adjustment. I want to know if this indicates there is a fault with HDMI port itself? The screen works fine, shows it can sync to the PS2’s input and the menu works too.
I have resoldered the mod wire because I did notice the leg connecting to the resistor pad was a bit loose and have also noticed that U7 gets very warm under the board.
