Way back in 2011, we reported on an exciting homebrew project that could emulate the Dreamcast’s GD-ROM drive. Being mechanical, optical drives are prone to failure and are often unreliable. Wouldn’t it be great if we could just run CD or GD-ROM images from a hard drive or memory card instead? A lot of time has passed since 2011 and now it seems that this dream might be a step closer to reality. Check out this Youtube channel for some tantalizing videos of the hardware in action.
No word on when (or even if) this hardware will be commercially available, but it certainly now looks as if it’s entirely possible. We’ll wait with baited breath.
