I’m considering getting a Koryuu for use with my Commodore C64/C128 and my OSSC. Anyone ever try any Commodore gear with your Koryuu?

My units are all NTSC but curious if anyone PAL or NTSC has tried it

I use mine with my PAL C64 and it works great for me, my C64 has the lumafix and the s-video bypass installed though.

Hi there… Hope it’s not too late since the thread started back in november.

I received my Koryuu yesterday. Tested it with my stock bread bin PAL C64. I’m using a self made S-video cable to connect the C64 to the Koryuu, which is connected to my OSSC. As a display I am currently using a 2018 Samsung QLED TV. Works just fine so far. Of course, because the C64’s video output is unmodded, you get the same issues you would see on a high quality CRT, such as the slight color banding, fuzziness etc.. But that’s expected and not a fault of the Koryuu or the OSSC. I am running that setup in OSSC’s generic 5x mode and the picture is stable, colorful and as sharp as it get’s from that machine. IMO the picture looks great with hybrid scan lines. Much better than when we hooked that thing up to cheap small tube TV’s using the RF output, back in the 80’s!

I took some screen captures of mine in action recently. It’s the cleanest I’ve seen the C64s S-Video:-

I just started playing with the RF-bypass + Koryuu + OSSC (no Lumafix) on my NTSC C64 and I agree it looks really good. Picture is sharp, and the jailbars are minimized to the point I haven’t felt the need to try lumafix.

Could you share your Koryuu+C64 ossc profile?

I didn’t really change anything in the OSSC. I just plugged in to Koryuu and used OSSC defaults. I just changed input on OSSC to component.

The Koryuu does have four ‘inputs’ to cycle through; I think “S-Video + pedestal (7.5 IRE mode)” looks best on my LCD the colors are a little more saturated.

                      Hi all,

I just bought the OSSC and Koryuu to get my C64 connected to a modern LCD monitor.

What I´m wondering is how you get the C64 connected to Koryuu? I was trying to find a 8pin DIN to S-video cable but couldn´t find any.

Are all of you technically so experienced that you solder and build your own cables or does anyone have a link where I could buy one?

                      Best regards,

                      Tobias

Are you in the USA?  I think S-video was a mostly USA thing.  I bought this cable from vendor in USA:

                        Commodore 64/128/16/+4 8-Pin DIN S-Video & RCA AV Cable

there should also be some on eBay.  Here is one from a UK seller: https://www.ebay.com/itm/250925966106?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=47HsXjQYSm6&sssrc=2047675&ssuid=NiSURDWTSxG&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY

A lot of people add a 300 Ω resistor to some pin on the s-video cable to somehow improve video quality on LCDs.  I don’t know the details.  I don’t know if this is beneficial for the Koryuu or not.  The cable I purchased from 8-bit classics has the resistor.

The eBay listing above also mentions adding this resistor – if you scroll down and read the details its on the image showing purpose of each connector.

                          Hi,

thanks for the fast response. I´m located in Germany.

I´ve placed the order at the UK seller that you provided.

Thanks again and hope to be able to play some old classics soon again on the original hardware. 🙂

                          Best regards,

                          Tobias

Once more many thanks for the S-video cable link. I received it in the meantime and it works perfectly. The picture I get when connecting C64 via this cable to the S-video input of Koryuu and the Koryoo via 3 cinch cables to the OSSC is crystal clear.

However I noticed that I´m missing the sound since of course S-video does not deliver audio.

So I also ordered a cinch to 3,5mm audio cable (like https://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B00HJUD7H2) to connect the two audio lines coming from C64 through the cable recommended above into the 3.5mm AV2 audio in socket from OSSC.

With this I hopefully should have everything in place to finally be able to play games on the original C64 on a modern monitor with sound.

All the additional hardware cost most likely as much as the C64, but it was worth the ride and I learned a lot about S-video, the video format of C64 etc.

Thanks again for the help and I hope my hints above might help another newbie/oldie… 🙂

                            Best regards,

                            Tobias
