toto1052.ended up replacing all caps on daughterboard, mainboard and OCU board. Still wouldn’t focus after new laser.
Turns out, I forgot to remove the solder blob for ESD protection. Oops.
Afterwards the disc would start to spin but lens wouldn’t settle – with the help of my scope I calibrated FE slightly downwards, now it’s happily reading an audio CD, no issue whatsoever.
Will be ordering Astal NTSC-J in a few days.
A miracle happened. The VA SG is alive. Having video artifacts on composite and an unstable RGB output, most likely caused by a faulty connector. Battery holder removed so she won’t keep clock, but no freezes or weird behaviour otherwise.
The PLL is healthy even after all that hot air blasted everywhere to remove ICs. Looks like the PCB is not damaged on inner layers, just solder mask corrupted. I’ve been incredibly lucky. I only pulled half a pad and an unconnected one on a SH-2.
I plan on installing a Fenrir on it, after trying to replace spindle and sled motors, and the Optima-6, to see if it does anything. I have this crazy idea of making a portable out of it.
Congrats. Yeah I think the “PLL dead” issue is overblown.
I’ve been working on 10 systems the past 2 weeks and every single one has stable clocks after a recap.
