I am trying to downscale ps3 and xbox 360 from 1080p to 240p and output via a hdmi to vga dongle connected to a mister vga to scart. i am getting an image but it looks like it dosnt have sync as its rolling. no matter what i try with the ossc pro settings it dosnt make any difference. can somebody share the secret please?
August 18, 2025 at 6:40 PM #66849My guess is the Mister cable doesn’t have a proper sync combiner and relies on the Mister having the ability to set composite sync in its ini file. Unfortunately it’s likely that your HDMI to VGA only supports separate sync so that particular cable will not work.
August 18, 2025 at 8:46 PM #66851the same cable and hdmi to vga work fpr direct video on mister – what do i need then? ideally id buy the actual expansion module but its never in stock.
August 19, 2025 at 9:27 AM #66855In that case it should work with the OSSC Pro too, are you sure you are feeding it a 15khz compatible signal? On the test pattern screen (which defaults to 480p) press left to cycle through different output resolutions, do any of them work?
August 19, 2025 at 10:37 AM #66857no matter what setting i try it rolls.
August 22, 2025 at 2:34 PM #66875I am stumped then. I can think of no reason why it’d work with a 240p signal from your mister but not one from the OSSC Pro, to the DAC they’re basically the same thing.
August 23, 2025 at 8:57 PM #66896Are there any details on the VGA-to-SCART cable? A simplistic one may require certain sync polarities etc.
August 24, 2025 at 11:47 AM #66900That’s true but if it works with the same DAC with Mister I can’t see how it wouldn’t work with the Pro.
August 25, 2025 at 4:33 PM #66911I’m afraid things are not that simple when it comes to HDMI. If you can set both Mister and Pro in DVI mode, then most metadata related issues (aside from EDID) are removed from the comparison and remaining potential differentiators are sync timings and polarities.
August 25, 2025 at 4:39 PM #66913Hmm, but we’re talking the same DAC. So the output from the DAC should be very similar in terms of polarity etc, regardless of the input, I just can’t see how it would work with Mister DV but not with /any/ of the screen modes the OSSC Pro outputs from its test patterns… but, well, here we are!
August 27, 2025 at 11:13 AM #66987what if i fed the vga output from the dac into a sync strike? would that help? i have ome one route for other projects but if ot helps here id use it.
August 28, 2025 at 8:25 PM #67043I don’t think sync strike helps here. If you are able to test the VGA output (any mode) with a compatible monitor and ensure it works, then most likely the issue is with the vga to scart.
August 28, 2025 at 8:37 PM #67044The sync strike would replace the VGA to SCART cable so I would say well worth a try as that is what we suspect is causing the issue.
I have tested this before (see https://videogameperfection.com/2023/12/12/ossc-downscaling-delights/) and it does work, at least it did work with the DAC that I used. An external PSU for the sync strike was also required, which can be inconvenient but it should work.
September 10, 2025 at 5:45 PM #67165Sorry I’m thinking of the UMSA here not the Sync Strike, the Sync Strike is unlikely to help.
September 21, 2025 at 7:20 PM #67264Just wanting to keep you all in the loop – i got hold of the extra output addon and now it works!!! and oh boy does it work downscaling to 240 and 288 looks amazing!
