Hi guys, new to this forum, had an OSSC since Christmas (1.7). I recently plugged my Dreamcast into it using a VGA cable and got a bluish screen, so I tried RGB SCART and got the same – but it was playable for a length of time. Tonight I got around to investigating the bluish green tint and found my R (pin 15 maybe?) had lifted from the Dreamcast mainboard, and got this soldered back down – worked perfect, now I get proper picture.
For ten seconds.
After 10 seconds, the OSSC loses sync (both video and audio) and only power-cycling everything brings it back. I know it’s not the OSSC, because my Saturn doesn’t do this through its own RGB SCART, so I can only infer the OSSC doesn’t like my Dreamcast now it’s putting out proper RGB. Anyone seen this before?
What I haven’t tried: going back to, and staying with, my VGA cable: on an unmodified PAL Dreamcast the only game I actually want to play through the VGA cable is Skies of Arcadia….which notoriously and only in the PAL region does NOT support VGA (how very dare you Sega). I don’t want to be unplugging and replugging in cables too much in case I damage my soldering on the mainboard – not likely, but doesn’t hurt to be careful.
EDIT: Fixed it! For anyone else that has the same issue, what was happening was: I had broken one of the solder joins to the cooling fan, so the Dreamcast was putting itself into a protection mode to prevent it overheating because it didn’t think a fan was there (though it was spinning). Reflowed solder, and I can happily report that my Dreamcast has stayed on for about five minutes now, and no it wasn’t an OSSC problem at all! This can be closed.
