I understand the concept of double sampling, but what really are the extra samples if not the same as adjacent samples, assuming your base sample rate is already optimal for your source resolution? Should upsample2x theoretically look the same as line2x or is there something about the analog signal I don’t understand?

The use case for Upsample2x is mostly if the display doesn’t accept a sample rate that’s been optimized for the source. Oversampling creates a softer but smoother look, with less visible alternating sharp and soft bands where the taken samples are out of phase with the source pixels.
