Hello everyone,
First of all, this is my first post here, I hope I have all the required information for you to be able to support me. OSSC works fine with other consoles, but I’m having issues with my Wii…
I’ve been trying to get my Wii (EU launch model) to work with OSSC (first with a model from 2021, and now with the 1.8 model) and I always have the same issue. The screen randomly fades to black for a second or so, then resumes like nothing happened… Is there anything I can do to find out more about this issue? Some specific logging I could activate? Some specific configuration I should try?
* Which console model (US/JP/EU, model number) is in question, and does it have some mods?
Wii EU 2006 launch model (not sure where I can find specific model name), softmodded (Bootmii / Homebrew Channel), configured as 480p
* Which type of AV cable is used with the console?
RetroRGB and Original YPbPr cables, issue happens with both cables
* Is that AV cable directly connected to OSSC (which AV input?), or are there some devices such as switches on the way?
Yes, directly connected to OSSC
* Which display is used, and is OSSC output directly connected to it?
Philips 55OLED705 and yes, OSSC is connected directly through HDMI
* Does OSSC show sync information on its character display, and is red LED turned off? If sync info is shown, please include that in your report along with details from info screen (accessed by pressing INFO on the remote).
Yes, there is SYNC information on the character display and the red LED is turned off… see screenshots below. I don’t know whether a video showing what’s happening could be useful…

February 15, 2024 at 10:35 AM #60213By “fades to black” do you mean it actually fades? as in the picture gradually goes darker?
February 15, 2024 at 10:59 AM #60214Hmm, more like the screen goes black then back (sound still continues).
Here’s how it looks like: https://mega.nz/file/AdQ1WR5B#1tLXMDvvLovUGrMDMmbvHwgOrR1Z9jtkTGhRzG8fYVg
<div id=”ConnectiveDocSignExtentionInstalled” data-extension-version=”1.0.4″></div>February 15, 2024 at 3:35 PM #60218Can you try setting both H-PLL Pre-Coast and post coast (under sync settings) to 4?
February 15, 2024 at 4:36 PM #60220Thanks for the update @BuckoA51 – I tried the setting and (especially with H-PLL Post-Coast) it was worse, the screen was black (almost) all of the time. I’m curious, what do these settings actually do?
HOWEVER! I remembered reading that the quality of the connections (cables and such) was everything and so I decided to put the electrical plug of my OSSC in another outlet. I moved it from one multipower plug to a different one and – as unbelievable as it sounds ! – the black screen (almost) dissapeared! It appeared perhaps once or twice whil the main Wii menu was on, then I tried playing a game and for at least five minutes I had not a single flicker!
So there you go, probably not an OSSC board issue, rather something related with the quality of the electricity!
I’ll continue testing over the next few days/weeks before putting this as “solved”.
<div id=”ConnectiveDocSignExtentionInstalled” data-extension-version=”1.0.4″></div>February 17, 2024 at 6:58 AM #60234Okay, so unfortunately this was a short-lived joy. Maybe I was just lucky, but the last few days I’ve played the Wii again (legit Wii and GC discs as well as through USB LoaderGX and Nintendont) and these black screen (flickers?) appear again.
There seems to be no consistency. Sometimes I’ll have a couple of minutes without any black screen, sometimes I’ll have a couple of them in the span of two to three minutes…
Changing the H-PLL Post-Coast to 4 increases the flicker drastically (the screen almost remains black all the time). Not sure what the Pre-Coast does.
<div id=”ConnectiveDocSignExtentionInstalled” data-extension-version=”1.0.4″></div>February 17, 2024 at 9:39 AM #60235You can try changing analog sync Vth, I’ve seen some Wiis occasionally losing sync with the default setting.
February 17, 2024 at 10:12 AM #60237Thanks marqs – so the idea (I guess) is that I have to play with the sync options until I find what works (for my Wii/TV combination)? Any things I shoud be aware of?
Are there any risks of bricking or destroying anything (e.g. my TV) if I go too far with the options?
<div id=”ConnectiveDocSignExtentionInstalled” data-extension-version=”1.0.4″></div>February 18, 2024 at 6:20 PM #60249The sync options only control video ADC so they should be safe to experiment with. It sounds like its PLL only very briefly loses lock if red LED does not blink. You can also try increasing Hsync tolerance and setting Analog STC LPF to 0.5MHz.
March 13, 2024 at 8:10 PM #60685Are you still having this issue? I am having a similar problem with the scaler mode on the Dexx board. i have tried toggling framelock on/off with no luck. I have my Wii connected with HD retrovision component cables -> comp2rgb ->retrogamingcables passive switch -> Dexx
March 13, 2024 at 8:18 PM #60686Hmm, I haven’t checked since my last message. I’ve been mostly abroad for work so didn’t have time to do proper testing.
My configuration is much simpler: Wii -> HD Retrovision Component Cables -> TV.
Though I did order the Retrotink 4K which will give me another way to connect my Wii to the TV. And from there, I might discover whether it’s due to my Wii, my TV or the device in between…
April 22, 2024 at 11:26 AM #61345So… it’s a couple of months later now…
Still, no success with my Wii and OSSC. There’s some random black flickerings happening and I can’t control/fathom where that comes from.
I found a way to play my Wii on my 4k screen without these flickerings by using the RetroTINK 4k. So, I can’t say that my issue (OSSC and Wii) has been solved, rather that I found a workaround.
July 11, 2024 at 11:53 AM #62403A similar issue was resolved in this thread, let us know if that works also for the Philips set.
July 20, 2024 at 7:45 AM #62530Thanks for letting me know! I’ll have a look at it.
I’m not sure whether I should download the new firmware or the T1/T2.
July 22, 2024 at 8:43 PM #62562The new 1.11 firmware has both relevant settings so you should just use it.
