Ok so this quest for 4:3 has taken me on a whild ride guys.
Im convinced that it’s my TV just not playing nice so ive kind of landed on a middle ground here.
These settings get me 4:3 with a nice fit for most games. I actually have three OSSC profiles.
One for 640×448 one 640×480 and other for 512×448. These three do a good job of capturing most games. I also set swiss to 1:1 output.
640×448
Samplerate 858
H Backporch 100
H Active 640
V Backporch 50
V Active 448
Sampling phase 180640×480
Everthing the same except V Active 480
512×448
Samplerate 858
H Backporch 164
H Active 512
V Backporch 48
V Active 448
Sampling phase 180This combo has given me most games at 4:3 on my TV while being razor sharp. Not perfect as some games are funky like Resident Evil Remake and RE4 in 1:1 but no denying they are as sharp as you can ever hope for on original hardware.
Again many will say why 640? My TV does not like 704 and especially 720! 704 it streches to the full 16:9 for some reason and 720 comes off as too skinny. 640 was the sweet spot for my TV. LG Oled C8.
The problem it that it makes the image blurrier.
Also the guy that recommended buying another tv lol. I have an Oled LG and my tv doesn’t let me change the aspect ratio of GameCube games to 4:3. So I’m to ditch my oled for another tv that can do this one thing. Lol.

So it is what it is that the ossc and my oled will just have the incorrect aspect ratio. When set to 960p and I don’t know how to fix it without compromising image quality. Frustrating. Wish the GameCube had a Dreamcast hdmi mod where it also doubled to 960p at the correct aspect ratio.

On some games like Luigi’s mansion it fills perfect. On others like sunshine and twilight princes I get some thin black bars on top and bottom.
Is this due to the GameCubes different internal resolutions?
ok makes sense. Which one is more accurate or which one do you recommend?
getting the sample phase right with those old SNES is a total freaking nightmare. in fact the sample phase part of the OSSC is the worse part of the OSSC.
Hey guys so I figured out kinda what happened but I’m still confused. Lol. Ok so I just got my N64 Ultra HDMI and I was super pumped. I’m like no more stupid phases and it’s going to blow my RGB+OSSC combo out of the water.
So I’ve done like 20 hours of testing and holy crap what I discovered.
So my RGB mod from retrofixes is a simple RGB mod. I don’t remember getting deblur or anything just a simple RGB mod.
But in testing my ultra hdmi and turned on sharp pixels and deblur and switching back and forth between that and my OSSC N64 RGB 5x it looks the same!!!! Well the OSSC isn’t as bright and the aspect ratio is off cutting the top and bottom on some games but other than that the sharpness of text and everything is the same!!!
WTF!!! When I turn off deblur and sharp pixel on the ultra then it looks blurrier for sure. What the heck is going on?
Ok so my initial complaint was setting the phases with the multiple resolutions. Well my phase options are actually dead on perfect!!!! What was messing me up is that deblur messes with font. So on my N64 OSSC+RGB the games that have messed up font due to deblur look exactly the same on both ultra and RGB. When I turn off deblur on ultra the font is fixed. What the heck!!! How can that be if my RGB mod from like 2019 didn’t have deblur. I’m so confused. I thought this blurry text was just different resolution and the dumb phase but no is the deblur.
Hope this makes sense. I’m so confused. Lol.
Anyone solve this? My gamecube games change aspect ratio too depending on the game. My LG Oled aspect settings are grayed out when using the OSSC for some reason so can’t fix it.
Luigis Mansion for instance isn’t 4:3. It’s a thinner image. not sure why this is happening. Same thing happens to Final Fantasy 6 on super nintendo.

March 28, 2021 at 3:33 AM in reply to: Gamecube 480p 2x mode aspect ratio not 4:3. Any ideas? #46274Lol. In English? No disrespect but man I don’t know what you said. I think I tried what you said but made no difference.
March 28, 2021 at 3:11 AM in reply to: Gamecube 480p 2x mode aspect ratio not 4:3. Any ideas? #46273It’s not Swiss. Been using Swiss for a long time and this never been a problem. Also I tried it without Swiss. It’s the ossc for sure.
March 26, 2021 at 10:09 PM in reply to: Gamecube 480p 2x mode aspect ratio not 4:3. Any ideas? #46226My Swiss menu is in perfect 4:3 so that leads me to believe that it’s fine for me at 720 but when i pick games the aspect changes depending on the game. Just weird seeing Luigis Mansion in a 8:7 like aspect ration. Not as thin obviously but i get snes 8:7 vibes and i’m totally not used to it on the cube.
Yeah i’ve wasted hours of my life with sampling phase for gamecube, wii, and especially N64.
Again, i can get super mario (320) looking perfect but all other stuff is a nightmare. Too many resolution changes and making the N64 which is blurry already blurrier due to timings being wrong is just bad. That system does not need help looking blurrier.
So yeah saddens me to say this but i’m probably gonna take it off the OSSC chain and find a HDMI solution.
Wii has similar problems. Blurry ugly system on OSSC and sampling phase is a nightmare. Needs a HDMI solution. What that’s actually obtainable. Which in the retro community good luck.
March 26, 2021 at 8:38 PM in reply to: Gamecube 480p 2x mode aspect ratio not 4:3. Any ideas? #46221So basically go with 720 (i already have this as i use firebrandx profile) and just kinda live with all the different screen sizes after that. But as long as i have 720 i’ll be fine for any game that uses the whole screen basically. i think that’s what i’m understanding.
Weird so why does the EON HDMI in 480p and OSSC passthrough have every game in 4:3 but once it switches to 2x it starts using all the different aspect ratios?
March 26, 2021 at 4:14 PM in reply to: Gamecube 480p 2x mode aspect ratio not 4:3. Any ideas? #46205I did all that and nothing worked. This is my best guess. I read that the Gamecube internal resolution is different than the 480p its displaying. So basically most of the time it’s image is being stretched ala SNES (not as bad though) but with 3D this isn’t usually a problem. This can be seen clearly in the Gameboy advance disc where it’s blurry pixels and that’s probably cause the image is being stretched.
So on passthrough is no problem the TV is handling and correctly outputting the 4:3 aspect ratio. But in 2x at 960p the TV I think goes into PC mode (the TV has two different setting presets for passthrough and 960p even though it’s the same gamemode) and thus is displaying the image based on the internal resolution of each game vs the normal stretched 480p resolution that happens usually.
Is annoying.
