Okay, I might try that. I’m just confused still. The eBay listing says “For sale is an RGB modded N64(NTSC-U/C) with the THS7314 amp. This N64 has an 03 revision board and outputs CSYNC as-is.” The cable they said they tested it with is also the same one I bought. Hopefully the different cable will work though.

Does anyone have any ideas? The eBay seller didn’t respond to my message and Retro Access hasn’t responded about if I might just need a different cable.

Here are pics of the mod. The tape is under the chip and wires and I can’t remove it. There was the same tape on the metal shield under the N64 pcb too when I removed it. https://twitter.com/Necrobot20XX/status/1004906115740721152

I will once I get the chance, it might be a day or two. I’m in the US.

The OSSC is the only way I can test it. The composite works, so the console is fine. I opened it up and the mod seems okay as far as my limited knowledge goes. The eBay seller has sold quite a few modded N64s all with positive feedback. The listing said tested and working. They even used the same type of Retro Access cable that I bought. N64 is what I was really looking forward to since emulation for it sucks, I hope I can figure something out.

Okay, so when I was using the NES and Genesis / 32x / CD, and a game needed to be cleaned or readjusted, the OSSC picked up the signal but just showed a black screen. When I tried changing the sync settings today I tried a different and apparently cleaner game and guess what, it worked… Sometimes the simplest solution is the correct one. I just didn’t have the same problem with the other cartridge based consoles so I didn’t think that could be it. Sadly the N64 still doesn’t work even with cleaning the games and stuff.

I have a couple of updates to post. I got an email from Retro Access that said this.

“Hi, We’ve been getting a couple other questions like this this week and I don’t know if something has been changed in the OSSC firmware or not (I’m going to ask around) or whether there’s just been a new batch of OSSC sent out so we’re just hearing from more new owners getting used to the settings, but the scenarios are playing out like this:

                  1. The cable works (confirmed on one console)
                  2. Issues with another device with Nintendo av out

There are some definite differences between output on different Nintendo consoles, even between different Snes consoles. The voltage on csync tends to differ depending on the board in the snes, for example it’s fairly low on older Snes consoles and runs to 5vpp on 1chips. Mods can bring more variance into the mix especially if they output 75 ohm sync. I don’t know if I should try putting in a higher value resistor, but the OSSC should work with sync signals under 1vpp which the current cable build will bring it to (with resistor in the av out.) There are settings in the OSSC to change the sync settings. Basically, it does sound like the issue is with sync because the picture cuts out on OSSC when you don’t have the right sync range. Can you let me know if you have tried adjusting sync in your menus? If anything fixes this, can you let me know what settings you used? Thank you.”

I went and messed with all the settings that I understood and the OSSC still said no sync. Before I email them back I was wondering if anyone had an idea of what the setting would be. On a different note, while testing the Nintendo cable with the NES I noticed something new. I don’t know if something is wrong with the system, the cable, the mod, or what but the top of the image starts curving to the left. When I change settings on the OSSC and when I hit the reset button on the NES (just before the screen goes black) the image straightens back out at the top. Here is a picture . Is this part of the overscan area? It seems pretty far down to be, and the Genesis and PC Engine didn’t have overscan areas that big. On the other hand Castlevania and Ninja Gaiden are both all black there above the area with your health and stuff. Any help on these issues is much appreciated.

I tried both SNES consoles on the OSSC with the default settings and tried moving the cable around too. I emailed Retro Access to see if they had any idea what could be going on.

I tried the PS1 and PS2 over scart and it worked fine. I tried the Genesis and it worked fine. The PC Engine worked fine after removing the adapter. I haven’t went back and tried the SNES and N64 yet, just haven’t had time. I went back to Retro Access and realized that I could have potentially ordered a cable that wouldn’t work with the N64. This still doesn’t explain why the SNES isn’t working, the cable seems fins since the NES worked.

You’re right, the cable wasn’t JP-21 for the PC Engine. The 2 SNES consoles I tried were the original, non-mini versions, one serial number is UN25630692, the other is UN319572106, and if it helps the RGB N64 serial number is NS137880414. I’ll test the other consoles as soon as I can and report back.

My screen is an RCA UHD 4K TV, I don’t know the model. The NES when hooked up, via the same Scart cable that I used for the SNES and N64, worked all the way up through line 5x mode. All the stuff that didn’t work showed no sync on the OSSC LCD, so I don’t think it’s my TV at all. it seems like the OSSC is not detecting a signal from the non-working consoles.
