So, still not a word on this? *sob*

It would be great for producing a standard res crt look in x4 and x5 (every other column), and a fantastic feature for Mini consoles (every other line) among other things.

If a reason for the silence is that the idea is reserved for the Pro, well that’s a shame.

I doubt marqs and contributors don’t see the benefits of such a feature, maybe a lot of users are unaware but they’d definitely get the reason why we wish for it after the results would be demo’ed.

One more: recently I’ve tried the pc engine mini (with a hdmi>vga dongle) and I thought “DAMN if only we had that”.
(the mini’s default crt effect is terrible)

Draw only every other line and/or column is missing sorely indeed. Marqs sounded optimistic about a year ago so I don’t know why the silence about it, while requests for fairly obscure cases get attention.
Originally I though such added feature to the scanlines engine would find few use cases, but in fact it should be quite useful in many places, like I was also contemplating all the things I could do with the 360’s 2D library.

        Welp, fingers still crossed!

          Thank you!

PS: is there any chance in the future for the linked or should we just forget about it ?

There is a warning in the official wiki, although it does not specify ‘in particular IPS panel displays’ which I think it should.

Beware of using the OSSCs Line2x (bob) or Line4x (bob) deinterlacing modes on sources that display static graphics or text for a long period of time. The OSSCs deinterlacer produces a constant flickering effect. This can cause image retention/burn in to occur faster than normal.

Once, after experiencing the same thing with the OSSC on an IPS, I wanted to try clean-scaled and unfiltered emulated games that feature flickering contents, like the title screen of Progear, and the burn triggered rather soon and was brutal, well-defined, kinda in the same fashion.

            methinks, what participates;
            a. sharper, unsmoothed scaling = fully exposed, less diffuse flickering (flicker more precisely localized on specific pixels where it happens)
            b. purer colors to switch to back and forth = greater strain on the crystals
a+b = greater than usual flicker intensity that exhausts wimpy IPS crystals too soon

In short; manufacturers surely always knew about the limits but never thought anyone would try their panels with such ‘brutal’ signals lol.

It can happen very quickly sometimes depending on the base flickering colors, and of course in particular with the OSSC set to bob deinterlacing which is so sharp it exacerbates the potential issue.

Anyway on IPS panels (which btw I assume is quite likely what we’re seeing) it is temporary, the burn marks will go away with time, but you can hasten the recovery by playing this kind of video: https://youtu.be/39HUG7QrQi8

Just remember when you play to not leave any deinterlaced flickering contents on for more than a just very few minutes, it’s a bit annoying but that’s just how cheap IPS displays are these days; they can look very good and accurate but they’re also rather weak products overall (temporary burn and backlight bleed)

As for the OSSC it is not responsible for the issue, being a progressive signals-focused device it doesn’t feature advanced anti-flicker, but maybe the future OSSC Pro will (?)

Sorry to UP this but I’d like to know ultimately if there’s a final word on this; option to draw only every other scanline or column.
(my personal expectation is for the latter especially for x5 mode)
marqs you were saying it might be easy to do but maybe it’s not after all ?

I have that monitor it happened to me too but the burns go away after a while, you can accelerate the process by playing an RGB ‘cleaning’ video from a file or even YT.
That issue wasn’t too common in the past but today it happens to all IPS panels all name brands, no exceptions it seems.

On that monitor I don’t use the OSSC for playing sources that are interlaced at all times (like most PS2 library) and therefore require constant deinterlaced output, so I never meet the dreaded flickering for longer than a few seconds or minutes within games that have like interlaced ingame menu screens, or progressive but fast flickering items (e.g Progear title screen), none of these are a problem unless you leave these particular screens to display for too long.

If one seeks a LCD that doesn’t have this temporary pixel marking/retention weakness, then it has to be a VA, ViewSonic don’t have a large one that would be identically as good and convenient as the VX3211-mh in 32″ size, they do have 27″ but all curved AFAIK, except the VG2739 which is rather old and lacks enough info to recommend. Maybe they have a good 24″ VA idk.
(NB: rare cases of VAs marking to flicker have happened though, I think I’ve seen a couple of cases on rtings website, but that wasn’t much)

Other brands I don’t really care about since for the OSSC I don’t believe there are any making monitors offering as much convenience, compatibility and quality for the original OSSC than those select ViewSonics (that mostly won’t matter later with the OSSC Pro but for now that’s the status)
Maybe there are a couple VA models out there from other manufacturers that handle everything as well in the ViewSonic fashion, but that’s impossible to guess without users specifically trying them with an OSSC and reporting to the community.

                    Hi xyga here.

Created an account just to say I’ve been hoping for a similar feature, but for columns ! ^^

Reason: in x4 and x5 the kind of CRT imitation we get is a look similar to that of high-TVL like monitors, not looking like standard definition consumer tellys.

So one would say “why not output in x3 if you want that ?”, and I would agree but in most cases the issue is that the display’s built-in scaling – unlike in x5 1080p mode on my compatible monitor which is 1:1 – easily creates ugly artifact/patterns.

The only way to mitigate the issue is by tweaking ADC but it means making the picture way too dark.

Optimized modes also aren’t fit for this, so it’s draw only every other scanline while in generic modes that’s needed.
For me it is the only thing that’s missing on the original OSSC.

(Yep I’ve been bothering marqs a few times about it on shmups some time ago. ^^ )
