Hi guys,
so recently I noticed while playing N64 that the sound clips in certain loud scenes. However, the audio from the 3.5mm jack is fine.
My OSSC was ordered from here and has the audio expansion with DVI.
I don’t know if the audio is too loud with other consoles, but I would guess so. Is it possible to adjust the volume of the digital audio output in any way?March 26, 2021 at 7:48 PM #46218Go to the audio options in the settings menu and adjust Pre-ADC gain. Some consoles are just much louder than others.
April 1, 2021 at 9:52 AM #46394Finally got around to try it out.
Adjusting the Pre-ADC gain had no effect at all. It didn’t matter if I set it louder or quieter. I dindn’t hear any difference and the audio clipped like before.April 2, 2021 at 10:51 AM #46422Update to the latest firmware, there were some audio fixes a while back.
April 2, 2021 at 11:02 AM #46426I have the current firmware (0.88a) on my OSSC.
I always keep my OSSC up-to-date. 🙂April 4, 2021 at 11:27 AM #46457You got me stumped then 🙁

Hey husan93, I know, this thread is 5 years old by now…and maybe you aren‘t even frequenting this board anymore, but I figured it‘s worth a shot:
I think I got the same problem that you describe when downscaling to my CRT TV:
Sound, more specifically bass clips after a certain loudness/deepness threshold. The pre-gain setting of the Ossc Pro is already set to -12, but regardless of where it‘s at, I couldnt discern any difference, whether it be -12, 0 or +12.
Also tried turning my PC way down and my TV up to compensate but that didn‘t solve it either: Clipping persited and humming was added.
So I figured maybe the speakers of the TV really are broken instead, but connecting my original PS2 disproved that, it still sounds excellent.
So maybe the OSSC Pro might be outputting too loudly in general, the 3,5mm jack of the Extra AV extension is broken, its the Mr Pi VGA to Scart cable, I couldn‘t figure it out yet.
So my question, did you ever solve this problem? Or anyone else for that matter?
May 17, 2026 at 10:36 AM #69468We do now know that the N64 outputs audio that is too loud/over amplified by default as this caused an issue recently with the Morph, so the issue really is a design fault in the N64 but of course that’s not much help knowing that now not like Nintendo are going to fix it.
I don’t know why the gain settings aren’t seeming to affect it but I do know we solved the issue on the Morph by simply adding an inline 3.5mm volume control to the N64s output – https://videogameperfection.com/products/3-5mm-volume-control/
That’s easy to do with s-video or composite not so easy if you’re using SCART however we have had a solution for SCART for some time there were just delays getting it to fab, I’ll update here when it’s available.
June 8, 2026 at 11:45 AM #69760Having now tried such a 3,5mm volume control, I have to report that that didn’t solve the problem. As soon as a turn up the volume on my TV, it starts to clip again. Guess I have to wait for the Update and hope that finally does it. With update you mean the new Extra AV Extension that also supports Composite and SVideo outputs, I presume?
June 8, 2026 at 12:06 PM #69761Did you place the volume control before the input on the OSSC Pro or after the output of the OSSC Pro?
June 8, 2026 at 12:11 PM #69762I placed it between the Extension and the VGA to Scart cable. Since my PC is connected via HDMI and thats also how the sound is transported to the OSSC Pro there wasn’t a way to place the volume control anywhere else.
June 8, 2026 at 12:17 PM #69765I can’t explain this behaviour then. I’ll ask Markus to take a look.
June 8, 2026 at 12:19 PM #69766Ya ok, thank you. 🙂
June 8, 2026 at 1:13 PM #69767Dumb question but just in case, you have tried simply reducing the volume on the PC, correct?
Edit – sorry NM I saw above you said you did.

June 8, 2026 at 4:57 PM #69771When you emulating N64 via PC, maybe one trick is perfect:
- you have to set the “loudness equalization” to ON (under sound effects) in windows 10/11 OR set for N64-core of emulator the volume control to minimal gain (mostly min. -12 dB),
- set in the emulator the audio synchronisation to ON, switch between the audio driver “WASAPI” or “Windows Mixer”
- set in OSSC Pro the parameter “Pre-ADC gain” to -12 dB, set the audio source for HDMI (AV4) to AV4 (digital), to make sure, that the sound come from HDMI output of your PC OR when you go via other input, set the 3,5 mm jack correct under “3.5mm jack assign” in audio settings of ossc pro,
- set the volume control of your CRT to the wished level
