Hi marqs,
any follow-up to this topic? I’m in no rush to update, so I’m wondering if it’s safe to grab the latest fw as it is right now, or maybe better to wait for a possible replacement? I own an original, no audio, OSSC.
Thanks! ^_-August 12, 2019 at 1:20 AM in reply to: Original Xbox RGB scart cable or better recommendation? #27404Hi,
I own a PAL XBOX – unmodded, so I play original games at their stock settings (no forced 480p, for example). I used to connect my console to the OSSC through its original Microsoft RGB Scart cable, and honestly… It was decent at best. I got subtle – yet noticeable, at a close inspection – ‘wavy’ diagonal interference and also a hint of colour bleed, especially on reds. Now, I know the Scart RGB out on PAL XBOX systems is pretty pants to begin with, but that cable wasn’t doing it any favours.
To cut it short, I bought a C-Sync RGB cable from Retrogamingcables, and it improved things significantly. Gone is the interference and the bleed is almost unnoticeable, especially with scanlines enabled. It’s still not pristine, mind you, but I guess you can’t squeeze much more IQ than that, from an untouched XBOX, via Scart RGB. If you’re up to softmodding, though, I believe you can get 480p for (almost) everything and maybe use a component cable for overall better results.Edit – Nevermind, I just read in another thread that you own an NTSC XBOX. Wait for more educated recommendations, maybe, but I guess going with component is still your best bet.
Thanks again. I’ll check it out with Matt directly and see what’s the current situation.
Thank you. ^_-
Didn’t know you could buy the device from Mike himself… I was thinking about getting it from here, just like the OSSC, as I’m from Italy and the shipping is always fast and easy.Hi everyone,
as an OSSC early adopter, I followed the RT news with interest since the beginning (still on the fence, as I’d be using its S-Video out with the N64 only, coupled with the OSSC itself): my question is, should I buy it now, would the RT come with the latest hardware revision and new firmware installed? Thanks in advance!
@ENunn Thanks! I’ll definitely give your profiles a shot as soon as the new official fw lands.
Hey, thanks for sharing!
Do you know if your settings are also good for PS through PS2 – via back compatibility – or if it’s better to use a proper PlayStation?
Thanks in advance. ^_-
I see, thanks for clarifying. Coury himself mentions that as a possible cause: he says they tried two dongles, and in both cases there were artifacts on screen. Do you know if certain adapters just work perfectly, or if it’s a case where – with this setup – those issues are just inevitable?
Hi guys, I just finished watching MLiG’s video about the RetroTINK-2X:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mdUlcIR1yh4
and the part – starting around 13:05 – that mentions visible video artifacts – while using it in combo with the OSSC, at higher video modes than Line2X – got me a bit worried. Any of you encountered those issues?
A few, unfortunately:
Skies of Arcadia/Eternal Arcadia (US/JP)
Giga Wing (US/JP)
first print of Street Fighter Zero 3 (JP)
Super Street Fighter 2 X: Grandmaster Challenge for Matching Service (JP)
Touken Retsuden 4 (JPN)
Vampire Chronicle for Matching Service (JPN)
Illbleed (can’t remember which version)I’m sure I’m forgetting some other ones…
Hi Ted, thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately – with my soldering skills dramatically close to zero XD – it’s not going to make things any easier to me (unless there is a way to purchase a ready-to-go version of your cable, with the resistor and the capacitor already installed).
Thanks guys, appreciated your help. 😉
@BuckoA51 – I guess nmalinoski didn’t mention the Toro because (as far as I read… There are different boxes from the same manufacturer, so I might be wrong here) the switch trick often glitches things up to an extent that makes the game barely playable. While I hope to be able and get an RT2X with the first sale on VGP, that HDMI-out solution in the work sounds pretty neat!
August 6, 2018 at 11:39 AM in reply to: Suggestions for LCD monitor instead of TV for OSSC? (4K vs 1080p, etc) #22701That sounds very similar indeed. 🙂
Any reason why you didn’t mention Line2x? Compatibility issues with your monitor or you just don’t use it at all?About image retention. First of all, it’s a temporary effect, and it goes away in a few minutes/hours, depending on the monitor: if you ever want to try that out, be sure you do it at the end of one of your play sessions, so you can turn your monitor off and leave it like that overnight.
What does it look like? Well, to cut it short, it’s basically the flickery graphics elements in a 480i game (the life bars and fighters’ names in SEGA Saturn’s Virtua Fighter 2, for example, as well as the in-game UI in Ridge Racer V on the PS2) getting temporarily stuck on screen. Now, if you own Virtua Fighter 2 on the Saturn (I tested it with a Japanese copy of the game, on a Japanese Model 2 console), you can try this: just go through Arcade mode til the end – it takes me around 5 minutes, more or less – and then let the attract movies cycle until the one showing Shun Di’s exhibition. Then, you should be able to see the faint contour of the life bars and players’ names against the blue sky. Avoid Watch mode, as the constant 240p/480i swapping probably prevents the issue to manifest.
With PS2 Ridge Racer V, it’s even easier… You can literally play the game for a few minutes, and then backing up to the menus should reveal the same UI retention pretty clearly. Thanks! ^_-

(4K vs 1080p, etc) #22695@palette: for someone who likes scanlines, can I ask you what’s the best video mode, with a 1440p monitor? For example does a CAPCOM fighter on the Saturn look better in Line3x or Line4x?
I remember my previous LG 4K monitor looked great in optim. Line2x and Line4x, while in Line3x and 5x scanlines came out super thin, which I didn’t really like. Also did you ever try interlaced contents on your monitor, with the OSSC set to Line2x bob deinterlace? We know IPS monitors tend to suffer from temporary image retention, with flickery 480i graphics (Virtua Fighter 2 on the Saturn, for example, as well as Ridge Racer V on the PS2), but there’s not much knowledge, when it comes to VA/AMVA display like yours.
Signed in to the waiting list for the planned September sale. Can’t wait to start adding power-ups to my OSSC. 😀
