So, I’m back with a CPU-60 Wii. The last one with GameCube Backwards compatibility – and after I hacked it to get the 240p TestSuite to work, I can say this:

The last generation Wii has in terms of picture quality the exact same quality as the first Wii does. So it also has the haloing and yes this time I ordered a second component cable too, both Wiis with both cables have the same outcome. There is that “ghost pixel” stuff around everything (especially when looking ta the sharp-test pattern in the 240p TestSuite

Not… the OSSC can’t have the problem since none of the other consoles has it, and the XBox is on the same port and doesn’t suffer from the same problem, so it can’t be the component port either.

What I did see is that the newer revisions seems to have a brighter picture, but that is about it. Brighter isn’t better picture quality however.

I wonder what the NTSC department has to say, since both of my Wii models are PAL in 480p mode. There has to be someone on this board with a Wii and a Perfect Pixel-Fetish! lol

      Anyone? 😛

I do own both and I even have the original Component Cable for the GameCube (yeah… One of my first buys back in the early 2000) but I use the Wii for both Wii and GameCube games. I only do it because of the virtual Memory Card Nintendont creates – as far as I know, Swiss doesn’t allow that on the Cube, so it’s a disadvantage against the Wii. But yes, I can tell from direct experience that the GameCube has (with component) a far better picture.

But in general it’s for Wii games (for this topic here)

Now since I haven’t been able to find any other info, I decided to buy a second Wii on eBay. It’s a CPU-60 revision, so the last revision with GameCube ports. Since people say it has a better image quality, I will compare them directly and figure out what is true and what isn’t.

It’s a win for me since the newer revision has far less energy consumption anyway. 🙂

I will report back once it’s in my hands

But with 480p, why should it oversample? I would so much take a look at a second Wii user so I could compare the pictures :/

Yes, I tried every phase setting there is, and 180 seems to be the closest one to a clear checkerboard. I also used all the settings from the wiki for the Wii

              I hope so too. :/

One thing for the mod side of things – the DCHDMI mod looks 99,9% the same as the Dreamcast unmodified with a Toro Box and some work on the OSSC. It’s so much identical that I really hope I can archive the same with the Wii in some way.

It feels like the Wii picture is out of sync for some reason

I have. I think I’ve read the whole internet on it Wii picture quality, but there are a few things either not mentioned or not really seen.

I know the Wii has a “weird” picture quality, and I know the GameCube has a better one (actually years ago I said that in GBATemp and in the shmups forum), but for now I’m concentrating only on the Wii games.

And yeah the WiiDual exist(ed) but my Wii is a RVL-CPU-01 which isn’t compatibly with the WiiDual (only for CPU-40 and above) and I bought the OSSC because of not modding too much. I can get away with soldering stuff like the PSIO for the PS1, but I’m really NOT good at soldering flex cables. I hate them :/

Besides that, some say later revisions of the Wii have better picture quality, many say the opposite. MyLifeInGaming (YouTube) said, they see no difference. Others say there is a difference, but only in 480p content (meaning 480i looks everywhere the same, but the compiler of the progressive picture is superior in later models)

Has anyone a Wii on the OSSC with as much work done to the picture to show a comparison to my shots? Because I don’t see why there is that haloing I was talking earlier about. I am starting to wonder if the unit has some capacitor problem or if it’s somewhere else :/

I don’t have any other cable to test out anymore :/

the thing is – I really want the best out of the OSSC. It works, but I want to get the pixels cleared up

Yeah, as I said I connected the Wii directly to the OSSC with the official Nintendo Component Cable, fresh out of the box so there is no tearing or any damage whatsoever.

I used the Wii2HDMI before I had an OSSC, but I could never go back to that again lol

Too bad I just saw this thread. From my experience, the Hydra doesn’t support CSync. Only sync on luma. I had to figure that out the hard way :/ but now since I switched cables, everything works perfectly so far.
