Thanks Bucko.
Another question – is the 4x output resolution 960p within a 1080p frame (i.e. with black bars on the top and bottom)? If it’s not, is this possible with a future update?
If it’s outputting 960p then I think I’ll use 5x at 1080p and deal with the cropped picture.
October 4, 2017 at 10:03 PM #15696No it’s simply 960p.
October 7, 2017 at 8:39 AM #15770Thought I’d add some info about the edge regarding lag for anybody thinking of getting one to pair with an OSSC. All these results are taking from the edge’s audio delay slider which I believe is accurate. All consoles are running at their native refresh.
PAL SNES 8ms
RGB modded NES 8ms
PAL Saturn 8ms
PAL MD/MCD/32X 30ms
PAL Amiga 500+ 8ms
PAL PS1 30ms
PAL Jaguar 8ms
PAL Master System 1 30ms
NYSC-J Saturn 25msI also have a Dreamcast and PS2 but don’t use them through the edge, but can test if anybodies interested.
October 7, 2017 at 9:46 AM #15776Similar to my findings before. It’s a shame this bug exists and was never fixed.
November 9, 2017 at 5:59 PM #17004Thanks to Markus’ help I’ve manage to get 480px2 working on the VP50 Pro. Here’s the settings you need to use.
H.samplerate=858
H.synclen=62
H.backporch=107*
H.active=640
V.synclen=6
V.backporch=4
V.active=512*Adjust H.backporch as necessary to centre the image.
With these settings I get an image that’s quite badly squashed on the vertical, but by using the vertical zoom control on the VP50 this can mostly be corrected. This does mean the scaling is not pixel perfect. 480p scanlines don’t look too good, but I dug out my SLG3000 and paired it with my Dreamcast and, 240p scanlines as added by something like a SLG3000 look great. The checkerboard test (as featured in my early screenshot with the DVDO Edge) looks perfectly acceptable.
This is Zero Gunner on the Dreamcast using 480pX2 mode, Allow Upsample 2x on. No softening done by the VP50 Pro.
When I used 480p X2 mode before I pretty much dismissed it as not for me. The over-sharp sawtooth edges were just too much and not to my taste, but honestly it looks really great here (the iPhone camera doesn’t do it justice).
I’m definitely a 480p X2 convert, I need to get my Edge down from the loft and see how that looks too.
November 26, 2017 at 5:16 PM #17558Can anyone recommend a “FTDI USB to serial adapter” that I might use to update the firmware on a VP50Pro? I’ve read about potential bricking online if you use the wrong cable/kit to do so.
I’m not sure if I’ll have access to a Windows machine with a serial port; most likely a Mac booted into Windows and therefore needing something USB-driven.
November 26, 2017 at 5:40 PM #17560I think you’d be pretty unlucky to brick it, it seems to sit there in recovery mode if the fw flash fails. I just used a generic USB to serial for my 50 pro and it was fine.
November 26, 2017 at 7:56 PM #17567Ok, thanks for the advice.
December 9, 2017 at 1:40 PM #17915Updated the firmware now, and it has had a positive impact on image quality alright. However, x3 doesn’t seem to work; are there timing settings or similar I need to modify on the OSSC to get it to work?
x2 works out-the-box. Haven’t tried x4 yet.
December 9, 2017 at 4:54 PM #17917No 3x should just work. You on the latest OSSC firmware too?
December 9, 2017 at 6:00 PM #17919Yes; v1.05 on the VP50Pro, latest OSSC firmware too (from a few weeks ago). When I switch to x3 from x2 it goes blank.
December 9, 2017 at 10:22 PM #17920Do you need to tweak OSSC timing/settings when switching between doubling modes when hooked up to a VP50Pro?
December 10, 2017 at 8:40 AM #17923So far it appears that my Sega Genesis is the only console that runs with no issue on line3x with a DVDO Edge and ASUS VA325H monitor. SNES has sync issues though works on line 2x. Saturn works fine on line3x but the 240p/480i switch is much quicker on line 2x, I’m assuming the N64 would be the same. I’ll miss line3x :(.

Only when using 480pX2.

Yes I noticed that too, try 4x? SNES issue should be fixable with the mod Marqs is working on.

There aren’t very many N64 games that do the whole switching thing though. You can always use 2x as a fallback for those handful of titles that are affected.
December 10, 2017 at 10:34 PM #17934Is it recommended sticking to the custom timings mentioned here when running through the VP50Pro? http://junkerhq.net/xrgb/index.php?title=Optimal_timings
Also @BuckoA51, do you typically run all your consoles through the VP50Pro in x4 mode (480p aside)?
