I recently picked up the Samsung QN55Q8F 55″ QLED TV. It works great with the SNES over OSSC in 5x mode (Though my SNES is de-jitter modded) and it overall looks great! It does have some off-angle issues, but not to the point where I am unhappy.

I went with this due to reviews on the shmups forums regarding 4k TVs that work with retroconsoles and the OSSC. I also tend to watch TV channels with static logos on screen and leave them on all day in the background. An OLED’s risk of burn-in was a turn-off for me, and when the QLED TV I now own arrived and it looks fantastic, I felt it was worth it.

I also tend to keep TVs for a long time. This is my first TV in 11 years.

Samsung QN55Q8F. Just got this today. I only have my SNES running through the OSSC but it looks, and works, amazingly.

        TV: Samsung QN55Q8F
Console: SNES 3-chip model. (De-jitter mod installed).
HDMI Switch: ViewHD VHD-UHD4X1A 4×1 HDMI switch with optical audio breakout cable.
OSSC Settings: All modes work, including 5x. I still need to fine tune the settings, but this is jaw dropping.

I had issues with the signal coming out of the OSSC and my HDMI Switch/AV-Receiver setup as well. I found that taking the output of the OSSC and putting it through one of those generic SCART to HDMI devices with HDMI pass-through worked absolutely perfectly. The HDMI Switch and my A/V Receiver both have no issues with it now. I also did not notice any lag beyond the normal 2 frames my system introduces.

Yeah, I tried a direct connection between the OSSC and the HDMI Switch when I first got the thing. 🙂 When I first turned on the OSSC, there was immense flickering on the TV and eventually the image went black. None of the adjustments I tried worked until I just told it to do a straight pass-through. Straight pass through of 240p then has my TV do the scaling and that looks atrocious.

I then read about passing the OSSC signal through an HDMI passthrough device to “standardize and clean” the signal and tried it and was very happy.

I took a look at the 240p test suite software and did the lag tests. While very rudimentary there, it did indicate a total lag of 2 frames. To me, that is not noticeable. It’s kind of stunning to me that the SNES signal goes SNES=>OSSC=>HDMI-Pass=>Switch=>Receiver=>TV and that only creates 2 total frames of lag. Simply fantastic.

When I got my OSSC a little while back, I was able to get the 240p passthrough to work when my SNES was connected via SCART, but of course my TV did the upscaling and it looked like crap. Sadly, any mode other than normal passthrough would just die for me on my SNES.

Can’t really state the make and model of my setup since it’s fairly complicated. All of my consoles which have an HDMI output are plugged into a 5-port HDMI Auto-Switcher which then goes into my Denon A/V Receiver into my LG TV. So there are a bunch of things in the way which could have problems with the “non-standard” OSSC.

My LG TV is from 2007 and is a 42″ TV which I have set to PC Mode and that gives me a bunch of ways to modify how it looks. Still, the OSSC and NTSC SNES didn’t like each other.

I previously got this little generic SCART-to-HDMI adapter from Amazon when I JUST got my SNES. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0177DG71S/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o06_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

It was okay, but it would always stretch the SNES to full screen and seemed to have a bit of noticeable lag to it. So it wasn’t ideal. Later on, I replaced then with a cheap Gonbes 8220 Scaler and a scanline generator I designed in Eagle and etched out, and finally into a VGA to HDMI adapter. This was okay, but it was a TON of devices to pass through and was not very easy to store in my entertainment center.

As a last resort, I took the HDMI out from the OSSC and put it into the HDMI Input of the cheap converter I linked to above and connected the output to my HDMI Switch. It worked! EVERY signal except x5 now works great for my NTSC SNES and my setup. Even better is I cannot notice any lag from the SCART to HDMI adapter which makes me think the analog-to-digital conversion is where the cheap adapter is putting in all the lag.

So now, I have my OSSC sitting on top of the SCART-to-HDMI adapter that is acting as a signal smoother, so to speak.

Very nice. One week after ordering the OSSC it arrived across the pond into my hands here in the States. Thanks guys!

Oh cool. Sweet. Will wait for that when it comes out. Many thanks!

Got my shipping notification of the second OSSC I ordered. Fantastic. Also decided to hook up my SNES to my OSSC using the setup I have now. The parts I need for the enclosure of the load switch I ordered arrive tomorrow, so I’ll get the final setup done this weekend.

Anyway, I sadly did have some issues with the SNES and my Switch/Receiver/TV. One or all of the three. However, I did read about being able to take the output of the OSSC and run it through the HDMI pass-through of a generic SCART to HDMI adapter. When I did that, everything worked! I’m not sure how it worked but I’m guessing the pass-through takes the slightly off-spec and troublesome signal from the OSSC and gets it standard enough for my other equipment to work.

This thing is amazing. I have it on 4x since 5x doesn’t work (gives me a no-signal even when going through the adapter), and best of all there is no lag. It pillarboxes everything perfectly, the image is sharp and clean, and I love it. Well worth the purchase.

Just saw a tweet about more OSSC being available for immediate shipment. Picked one up for a friend of mine as I can’t wait for the last few parts I ordered from Mouser to come in so I can hook mine up, and my buddy didn’t want to HDMI all his classic consoles.

Thanks guys. My switching load circuit can handle the power requirements just fine. I currently use it so when I turn on my SNES, the +5V from the SNES will signal the circuit on and allow the DC power from the AC Adapter to flow into my current setup. I designed the circuit to handle the power requirements for this just fine. (Was designed with this in mind in case I upgraded, which I just did. Heh).

From the answers provided here, it seems like this will also work just fine with the OSSC. 🙂

(The circuit is a dual source circuit so I can have one chip handle two separate DC inputs using only one signal line. I have two input jacks placed in a plastic “box” that is really just the shell of an old AC Wall Wart. One for each power line. I then have two outputs on the other side which are AC Adapter plugs (center positive). So I plug in the AC Adapter into one input line, the +5V signal from the SNES into the signal input line, and then connect the associated output connector into the OSSC. Turn on SNES, OSSC comes on and my HDMI Switcher automatically changes. Now if only my SNES NTSC SCART Cable would get here soon. Heh).

My OSSC is now out for delivery. Nice. Sadly, It’ll be a few weeks before I can get this hooked up as I need to wait for a SCART cable for my SNES to come in. (Too big a pain to make one myself, so I caved and bought one). Will still be able to see how I’ll fit it into my entertainment center though. 😀

Sweet. My OSSC is currently in the hands of US Customs. I almost wish I could make the two hour drive to NYC to pick it up myself. Heh. But it will certainly be here later this week. Looks like I’ll be putting together my custom, shielded SCART cable to hook my SNES up to it.
