Did you try going lower than V.Backporch 6? I don’t get an image from my SNES on my Panasonic GT60 until I hit V.Backporch 2. Keep going down until you hit 1 before ruling it out.
Did you try pressing the scanline button more than once? It always takes a couple of presses for me for some reason, it never works on one button press.
Can’t help you with your TV but in case you can’t get the other modes working, I would suggesting trying out the optimized modes. If your TV can display them, and you have the means to properly dial in H. samplerate and sample phase (or use another user’s setting, FirebrandX will also publish his someday), then it will look noticeably sharper than the generic mode, even at x2. Using scanlines will also help make the image look a bit sharper.
I’m sure I don’t need to tell you but the black borders on the sides are normal, they should be bigger in fact unless the game supports 16:9 or you like the image to be stretched. I could be wrong, but I think the border you’re seeing at the top is simply the unfortunate PAL squish, where a game has not been optimized for the 576 PAL resolution and is instead simply the 480 NTSC resolution with black bars in the extra lines of horizontal resolution, resulting in a squished image. A very common thing in PAL games. When you switch to PAL60, the resolution changes to 480 lines, eliminating the squish and the black bars. One of the many reasons to mostly avoid PAL consoles and games for pre-HD consoles.
Edit: The photo isn’t good enough to be able to tell what’s going on with the XBOX. And what do you mean by rough edges? Are you sure your TV’s sharpness setting isn’t making it look worse? Kinda looks like sharpening artifacts in the photo, but it’s too blurry to tell.
I just did some quick testing of the new OSSC 0.80 firmware and I’m happy to report that it appears that it has fixed the audio hiss on my Saturn! Thanks Marqs!
In my excitement to test this out I forgot that all your settings get wiped in the update process… serves me for not having written up all my optimized settings before.
Did this cable work on a CRT and your SFC?
I ask because even though the NES, SNES and GameCube all use the same multi AV out, they are not cross compatible. You can’t use a GameCube SCART cable on a SNES, they are wired differently, at least NTSC SNES.I would also strongly caution against plugging SCART cables into consoles if you don’t know what the cable is made for and what sort of sync it is wired for, and especially not plug the same cable into both PAL and NTSC consoles as there is a possibility that you will damage or put strain/wear on the equipment on both ends.
It does 3-5x only for 240p sources. 480p is 2x only.
Halo actually does support 480p just like almost every single XBOX game. However the PAL XBOX is locked to 480i in the OS for everything, but you can enable the NTSC video modes (480p, 720p and 1080i) with a softmod. The OSSC does store the Advanced timing options. However, if you are inside the advanced timing options while loading a profile, I have noticed that when you press the menu button after loading the profile (opening the advanced timing options menu that you were already in before) it will restore the settings that were there in the previous profile (or whatever adjustments you were making at that time). Is this perhaps what is happening with your unit?
I’m on firmware 0.78a btw.
Have you tried the advanced timing tweaks outlined in the “Tips & Tweaks: Lx3, Lx4, Lx5 modes” thread? I suggest you try those first.
Thanks for posting mistahsnart.
I’m glad I’m not alone with this problem, though I’m sorry you have this issue too.I was gonna try to make a good recording of the hissing to better illustrate it, would that be of any use Matt?
My Saturn is a Japanese model 1 , as previously mentioned.
Serial number is B52 198292.Thanks.

Got my cables in recently so I’m happy to finally write this report. On default OSSC settings, only x2 works.
However, with adjustments, I could get x3 and x4 working. Adjust V. active to 256 and V backporch to 3 and an image appears. SNES requires backporch adjustment to 2. It leaves a blank space at the top with those adjustments however. The TV reports the output as 1280×768 for x3 and 1280×1024 for x4.There is no sound in x4 mode, however there is sound in the x4 320×240 optimized mode.
x5 does not work, even with the adjustments suggested in the relevant thread.Super Famicom works, tested with a 1CHIP-03 system with a sync on luma cable. However it only works in the generic modes. 256×240 optimized mode results only in flashes of an image at regular intervals, but nothing more. Probably related to the uneven sync it outputs as outlined by Marqs. SNES is the only 256×240 console I have to test this mode.
480p x2 works, with adjustments. Need to set 480p sampling to VESA, and then adjust V. active to 512, and V. backporch to 11. It leaves a blank space up top just as the 240p x3 and x4 modes with adjustments.
Unfortunately you can only zoom in or change image position in 480p output, when outputting any of the higher resolutions the only options you have are 4:3 or 16:9 aspect ratio change.
Edit:
480i x4 does not work (nor x3). It should output the same resolution as 480p x2, or so I thought, but I can not get it to work.Tested consoles:
Super Famicom
Sega Saturn (Japanese model 1)
GameCube (NTSC) (480p and 240p via component)December 12, 2017 at 7:27 PM in reply to: Bad audio quality through SCART from Genesis (using headphone out) – OSSC 1.6 #17970I’d bet Retro Gaming Cables and Retro Console Accessories sell more cables that use the headphone output for audio than without. The fully shielded cable from RGC isn’t even available without it.
December 7, 2017 at 12:37 AM in reply to: Bad audio quality through SCART from Genesis (using headphone out) – OSSC 1.6 #17845I see. That is strange indeed.
I got confused by you and Zoomer btw, meant to direct the cable question at you 🙂December 7, 2017 at 12:21 AM in reply to: Bad audio quality through SCART from Genesis (using headphone out) – OSSC 1.6 #17843Are you guys sure one or both of your SCART cables aren’t just poorly shielded? I would personally not trust the cable linked from eBay. Most generic cables that are not from Retrogamingcables.co.uk or Retro Console Accessories are rarely of any decent quality.
Zoomer88, is your cable from either of the two most recommended cable sellers?I’m getting audio over HDMI from a source plugged into terminal labeled “A1 OUT/A2 IN”. It could be a phone playing music for example. Everything’s getting mixed and send over HDMI.
Someone correct me if I’m wrong, but I’m pretty sure you won’t get any sound into the HDMI stream from anything plugged into the “A1 OUT/A2 IN” port unless the OSSC source is set to component (A2). It should not inject sound into the stream from anything connected to A1. So you can’t just plug the 3.5 jack MD output straight into there if you are connecting the console via SCART.
Sounds like maybe your HDMI cable doesn’t have enough bandwidth for the x5 mode, causing the signal to drop out. That would explain why the lower modes work. Have you tried another cable or maybe even another display? Also make sure your cable isn’t over 7 meters long unless it’s an active cable.
