Well I knew that but I didn’t know if there were further possibilities =D

Still cool though, I prefer the actual pixel look though..although I could see this being nice on other consoles than the 8 bit ones =D

Does this mean you could have CRT style filters sorta like Retroarch has or is that something completely different? (Forgive my ignorance)

That’s exactly where I ended up. 5x in 1600×1200 forcing 4:3 on my monitor. 🙂

Hrm my NES is an original with a NESRGB mod and it doesn’t have any flicker at all..not sure if the guy who installed mine put in that Dejitter thing or what..

Wish I could be more help.

Weird, my PS1 doesn’t display that screen…I also use a PSIO though so it may be bypassing that screen (or maybe it’s only on the PAL console)

I think BlueStinger thinks it’s your TV 🙂

Do you have another display to try?

Does it happen in any pattern or just completely random? I recently had issues with just PS1 when the screen would flash very bright it would lose sync. I removed all extra components from my setup (I had everything going through a SCART switch, then SCART to Component adapter and a SCART audio breakout) and it completely stopped. I had something faulty in the setup causing interference…

Problem is that would be so hard to track down (well start barebones with device hooked directly to OSSC would be a start.

This may be unrelated though as this only happened to me on one console but worth mentioning anyway.

Good posts and explanations, thanks all. I gave up on the PS1 because it seemed that I could not get a stable picture in the optimal modes..and in 4:3 at 5x it seemed fairly accurate and sharp anyway.

I tried so many things with PS1, I could get it looking good in one thing or in the test suite but then in a game something would be wrong (glitching or moving pixels in a menu or text that is jumbled etc)

So my observations today along with the previous posts explaining, I was able to see what you guys were talking about. 5x in 256×240 optim with the proper timings is super sharp. It looks great.

In Generic 4:3 mode with default timings it also looks really nice – and if I turn sharpness on my monitor to max that compensates for some of the less sharp pixels. To me this more mimics a CRT. The optim modes seem artificially sharp..and while it looks great it doesn’t quite mimic the CRT look.

I can see how people would be divided on this..both work though. Using 5x 256×240 or 4:3 in 1080p mode looks quite good on SNES and PS1 and you of course only get the bars on the side, something I could get used to ignore over time (but it does bother me lol)

On NES I can use 4x or 5x with it filling the whole screen – since the graphics are much simpler the pixel stretching doesn’t look near as jarring in NES than SNES. But for overall consistency I may just use the same modes for both (and PS1) so that I get a consistent feel I can get used to.

Thinking using 4:3 mode might but the best bet since I cannot get optim modes to work with PS1 – maybe the consistency across those 3 consoles will be easier to get used to since they are all very similar =D

Anyway, just speaking my thoughts out loud. My problem is just being so anal and OCD about everything when really any of these work well enough to enjoy the games lol.

I may get a GameCube and/or Genesis to add to my collectoins so then that throws another wrench in there..but I think Genesis would run just like the SNES and GameCube of course has built in Component I could run that through my CRT that my PS2 is on or whatever…will cross that bridge later (have too many games to play right now anyway…I have a modest collection of stuff I actually had growing up and will use rather than trying to collect everything)

Thanks all for your support and posts – look forward to more opinions from others and what you ended up going with for your setup 🙂

(Small Update – oddly it seems like maybe 4x line mode with bars on all sides is preferable (same way FBX sets his up) – it’s less distracting on my eyes to have a full border around it…lol. Ah the joys of firstworldproblems…can’t decide which I like most)

The thing I can’t figure out is – following FBX guides I was able to get NES and SNES looking nice. When I do the same for PS1 I can NOT get rid of the moving pixels…and if I do on the grid then when I go in games it’s present in menus and some games.

However, using 4:3 mode instead of 256×240 then the picture is always fine without having to use the phase option.

So why not just always use 4:3 what is the diff in using that over 256×240 optim etc..?

I believe so – going to do some extensive testing to make sure. It seemed to be a bit flaky but so far bypassing all that other crap seems to have fixed it. I will report back after I test several games that were messing up.

That was my thought – just thought it was weird that everything else worked.

It does seem that dropping the Vth down REAL low to 56 (from default 123) might have helped..it stopped going out with Night Sword in FFT..but I am testing the other games now to see what happens.

Thanks for your help I really appreciate it. Will report back in a few.

Update: Fixed in Metal Slug X also – the part it was glitching the screen was flashing white on and off (explosion after a boss)
Update2: XenoGears also fixed, this one was the biggest culprit it would happen 10-15 times in the opening sequence (the screen flashing white constantly)

Seems maybe this solved it! Can you tell me why just for my reference – like to learn what is going on.

Update 3: So back in FF7, there’s a scene on the train where the screen keeps flashing, and now it loses sync over and over at that 56..I had to move it back to 123 for this game to work.

So is this normal? I shouldn’t have to change this setting for different games right? Is my cable messed up? Going to try direct connection to the OSSC.

Update 4: Connecting direct to OSSC via SCART works fine (even back at 123 mV)

I realized that I no longer need the Component switch, I had that when I used to have everything connected to CRT. Removing that should allow me to cut out that, the component SCART adapter, and audio breakout – that removes 3 possible issues. I will then test again and report back

Update 5: Sorry for so many edits..trying to work through it. So I now have my NES, SNES and PS1 going via SCART directly to the HAMA SCART switch and then into the OSSC – that seems to have solved the issue. So I probably had some connection issues with all those adapters…they were pretty flimsy.

This might be my solution =D And since my only component unit is PS2 I can just hook that one directly to my CRT

Further testing to make sure though the issue is really gone though 🙂

@marqs – Yes it does seem possibly related to brightness maybe, it happens with spells or explosions so it’s possible the screen could be going white or something. But it is SPECIFIC spots of all these games (same spot every time)

I do have 2.5MHz set – I have never touched Analog sync Vth or anything else on those screens (as I wasn’t sure what they did).

Could it be caused by something in my setup?

I have my consoles NES, SNES and PS1 RGB (all cables from retrogaming.uk) into a HAMA SCART switch, then that goes to a SCART audio breakout – then into a SCART to Component adapter and then component switch, which feeds into my OSSC.

I will try messing with the setting you mentioned, although I have no issues with sync in PS2, NES or SNES (in PS2 only if the game switches res during a menu or something)

Sync drop on OSSC for sure, orange light comes on for 1 second then it flashes and resyncs.

I mean it’s not the OSSC’s fault, it’s the HDMI handshake when the OSSC recvs a new resolution the monitor has to reconnect the HDMI with the new res. But I figured by now there was a workaround..I didn’t know so many games had resolution switches and definitely didn’t know ANY had it during GAMEPLAY or movie scenes.

I just bypassed my OSSC and hooked to my CRT and all works fine. So it is definitely the HDMI handshake when using the OSSC..

                              Sucks 🙁

Not yet – could that cause sync drop? It’s specific times in each game. Very odd …about 50% of the games I hvae tested have it in some form at certain points.

I mean I knew about menu switches like in Chrono Cross but during gameplay seems super odd.

I started making a list of tested games that do it and don’t:
                                FF7 During Combat certain spells
FFT Certain Spells (Night Sword in the opening tutorial mission does it every time)
Metal Gear Slug BKG transitions (such as after you beat the first large tank and all the bkg danges to a darker color) or explosions
                                XenoGears All over Cutscenes
Legend of Dragoon Transition in scenes and battle

Other games are fine so I don’t know how a cable could cause that. It’s not “random” but specific things that cause it.

                                These games had no issues:
                                Street Fighter Collection 2
                                Megan Man
                                Vagrant Story
                                Strider
                                Castlevania: Symphony of the Night

Apparently there is a lot of switching on PS1 games..I did not know this. I guess I will have to hook my PS1/PS2 to my small 20 inch CRT…kind of defeats the purpose of me getting rid of my my large CRT and getting an OSSC though 🙁

Update – during XenoGears it cuts in and out in and out during the opening cutscene with the mechs battling.

This can’t be nornal??? There should not be resolution switches happening in the middle of the gameplay cutscenes right? I mean one after the other.
